Biography of Henry Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire 1479-1523

In 1466 [his father] Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham (age 11) and [his mother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 8) were married. She by marriage Duchess of Buckingham. See Woodville Marriages. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Richard Woodville 1st Earl Rivers (age 61) and [his grandmother] Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford (age 51).

On 5th September 1474 Thomas Grey 1st Marquess Dorset (age 19) and [his future wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 14) were married. He the son of John Grey and [his aunt] Elizabeth Woodville Queen Consort England (age 37). They were half second cousin once removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Around 1479 Henry Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire was born to [his father] Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham (age 24) and [his mother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 21).

On 23rd January 1483 Elizabeth Ferrers 6th Baroness Ferrers Groby (age 64) died. Her grandson Thomas (age 28) succeeded 7th Baron Ferrers of Groby. [his future wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 22) by marriage Baroness Ferrers of Groby.

In 1485 [his brother] Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham (age 6) was restored 3rd Duke of Buckingham.

On 7th November 1485 [his step-father] Jasper Tudor 1st Duke Bedford (age 54) and [his mother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 27) were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. The difference in their ages was 26 years. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Richard Woodville 1st Earl Rivers and [his grandmother] Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford. In December 1489 [his brother] Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham (age 11) and [his sister-in-law] Eleanor Percy Duchess Buckingham were married. She by marriage Duchess of Buckingham. The executors of her father Henry Percy 4th Earl of Northumberland, who had been hanged by rebels during the Northern Rebellion earlier in the year, having paid King Henry VII of England and Ireland (age 32) £4000 for the privilege. His father, [his father] Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham, had been hanged for treason in 1483. She the daughter of Henry Percy 4th Earl of Northumberland and Maud Herbert Countess Northumberland. On 24th January 1496 [his step-father] Richard Wingfield (age 27) and [his mother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 38) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Richard Woodville 1st Earl Rivers and [his grandmother] Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford.

On 18th May 1497 [his mother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 39) died.

In 1503 [his brother-in-law] Walter Herbert (age 51) and [his sister] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon (age 20) were married. The difference in their ages was 31 years. On 22nd April 1505 Henry Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 26) was appointed 261st Knight of the Garter by King Henry VII of England and Ireland (age 48).

After 8th October 1505 Henry Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 26) paid Henry VII £2000 for permission to marry the wealthy [his wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 45) who was some nineteen years older than Stafford, and had seven sons and seven daughters by her first marriage.

In 1509 [his step-son] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset (age 31) and Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset (age 22) were married. She by marriage Marchioness Dorset. He the son of Thomas Grey 1st Marquess Dorset and [his wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 48).

Around 1509 Robert Willoughby 2nd Baron Willoughby 10th Baron Latimer (age 37) and [his step-daughter] Dorothy Grey Baroness Mountjoy, Willoughby and Latimer (age 29) were married. She by marriage Baroness Willoughby Broke, Baroness Latimer of Corby. She the daughter of Thomas Grey 1st Marquess Dorset and [his wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 48). They were half fourth cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 21st April 1509 Henry Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 30) was imprisoned on suspicion of treason, but was released without charge.

Around December 1509 [his brother-in-law] George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon (age 22) and [his sister] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon (age 26) were married. She by marriage Baroness Hastings. In 1520 [his sister-in-law] Anne Hastings Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford (age 49) died.

Around 1522 Gerald Fitzgerald 9th Earl of Kildare (age 35) and [his step-daughter] Elizabeth Grey Countess Kildare (age 25) were married. She by marriage Countess Kildare. She the daughter of Thomas Grey 1st Marquess Dorset and [his wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 61). He the son of Gerald Fitzgerald 8th Earl of Kildare and Alice Fitzeustace Countess Kildare.

After 1523 [his step-son] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset (age 45) was appointed Privy Council.

On 6th April 1523 Henry Stafford 1st Earl Wiltshire (age 44) died without issue. Earl Wiltshire extinct.

On 12th May 1529 [his former wife] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset (age 68) died. She was buried at Church St Mary the Virgin, Astley.
