Biography of Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland 1546-1629

In 1546 Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland was born to [her father] George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley (age 32).

Before 1549 [her brother-in-law] John Stewart 4th Earl Atholl and [her sister] Elizabeth Gordon Countess Atholl were married. She by marriage Countess Atholl. She the daughter of [her father] George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley (age 34). He the son of John Stewart 3rd Earl Atholl and Grizzell Ratray Countess Atholl. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.

In September 1556 Patrick Hepburn 3rd Earl Bothwell (age 44) died. His son [her future husband] James (age 22) succeeded 4th Earl Bothwell.

In 1557 [her sister] Elizabeth Gordon Countess Atholl died.

On 12th March 1558 [her brother] George Gordon 5th Earl Huntley and [her sister-in-law] Anne Hamilton Countess Huntley (age 23) were married. She the daughter of James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran (age 42) and Margaret Douglas Duchess Châtellerault. He the son of [her father] George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley (age 44). They were second cousins.

On 28th October 1562 [her father] George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley (age 48) died. His son [her brother] George succeeded 5th Earl Huntley. [her sister-in-law] Anne Hamilton Countess Huntley (age 27) by marriage Countess Huntley.

In February 1566 James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 32) and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Bothwell. She the daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley. He the son of Patrick Hepburn 3rd Earl Bothwell and Agnes Sinclair Countess Bothwell. They were third cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 7th May 1567 James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 33) and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 21) were divorced.

On 12th May 1567 [her former husband] James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 33) was created 1st Duke Orkney, 1st Marquess Fife.

On 23rd June 1567 John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland (age 42) died at Dunrobin Castle, Dunrobin. His son [her future husband] Alexander (age 15) succeeded 12th Earl Sutherland. Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 21) by marriage Countess Sutherland.

On 13th December 1573 Alexander Gordon 12th Earl Sutherland (age 21) and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 27) were married at Huntly Castle, Huntly. She the daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley. He the son of John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland and Helen or Eleanor Stewart Countess Erroll and Sutherland. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 19th October 1576 [her brother] George Gordon 5th Earl Huntley died. His son [her nephew] George (age 14) succeeded 6th Earl Huntley.

In April 1578 [her former husband] James "Lord Bothwell" Hepburn 1st Duke Orkney (age 44) died at Dragsholm Castle. His nephew Francis (age 15) succeeded 5th Earl Bothwell at Great Hall Stirling Castle.

In 1594 [her husband] Alexander Gordon 12th Earl Sutherland (age 42) died. His son John (age 18) succeeded 13th Earl Sutherland.

On 10th December 1599 Alexander Ogilvy and Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 53) were married. She the daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley.

On 14th May 1629 Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland (age 83) died at Dunrobin Castle, Dunrobin.
