The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

Biography of Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent 1645-1702

Paternal Family Tree: Grey

On 14th October 1641 [his father] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent [aged 46] and Mary Courtine Countess Kent were married. She by marriage Countess Kent. He the son of [his grandfather] Anthony Grey 9th Earl Kent [aged 84] and [his grandmother] Magdelane Purefoy Countess Kent [aged 69].

Before 1643 Anthony Fane [aged 29] and [his mother] Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 35] were married. He the son of Francis Fane 1st Earl of Westmoreland and Mary Mildmay Countess of Westmoreland.

On 1st August 1644 [his father] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent [aged 49] and [his mother] Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 36] were married. She by marriage Countess Kent. He the son of [his grandfather] Anthony Grey 9th Earl Kent and [his grandmother] Magdelane Purefoy Countess Kent [aged 72].

On 11th June 1645 Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent was born to [his father] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent [aged 50] and [his mother] Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 37].

On 28th May 1651 [his father] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent [aged 56] died. Monument made in 1658 at the De Grey Mausoleum, St John the Baptist Church, Flitton [Map]. His son Anthony [aged 5] succeeded 11th Earl Kent.

Between 2nd March 1662 and 1671 Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 16] and Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Countess Kent. He the son of Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent and Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 54].

On 7th May 1663 [his wife] Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 19] was created 1st Baroness Lucas of Crudwell with a special remainder to her heirs male by her husband Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 17], and failing which, to her heirs female without division; an unusual provision meaning it wouldn't become abeyant in the event of more than one daughter.

John Evelyn's Diary. 3rd May 1664. Came the Earl of Kent [aged 18], my kinsman1, and his [his wife] Lady [aged 20], to visit us.

Note 1. John Evelyn [aged 43] and Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent were first cousin twice removed; Anthony Grey's maternal grandmother was Jane Evelyn [aged 76]. She and John Evelyn had the same grandfather George Evelyn of Long Ditton.

In 1671 [his son] Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent was born to Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 25] and [his wife] Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 27]. He married (1) 20th April 1695 Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent, daughter of Thomas Crew 2nd Baron Crew and Anne Armine, and had issue (2) 24th March 1729 Sophia Bentinck Duchess Kent, daughter of William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland and Jane Martha Temple Countess Portland, and had issue.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Before 1673 [his brother-in-law] Banastre Maynard 3rd Baron Maynard [aged 30] and [his sister] Elizabeth Grey Baroness Maynard were married. She the daughter of [his father] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent and [his mother] Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 65].

On 20th April 1695 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 24] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 19] were married. They had five sons and seven daughters of whom only three surviving her. He the son of Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 49] and Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 51].

In 17th August 1698 [his mother] Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 90] died. She was interred with her former husband [his father] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent who had died some 45 and more years before at the De Grey Mausoleum, St John the Baptist Church, Flitton [Map] - see Monument.

On 19th August 1702 Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 57] died. His son Henry [aged 31] succeeded 12th Earl Kent. Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 27] by marriage Countess Kent.

On 1st November 1702 [his former wife] Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 58] died. Her son Henry [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Baron Lucas of Crudwell.
