Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.
In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

On 26th July 1810 [her father] John Horsley Beresford 2nd Baron Decies [aged 36] and [her mother] Charlotte Philadelphia Horsley [aged 36] were married.
In 1818 Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose was born to [her father] John Horsley Beresford 2nd Baron Decies [aged 43] and [her mother] Charlotte Philadelphia Horsley [aged 43].
On 6th September 1819 [her grandfather] Archbishop William Beresford 1st Baron Decies [aged 76] died. His son [her father] John [aged 45] succeeded 2nd Baron Decies of Decies in Waterford.
On 25th November 1834 [her brother-in-law] Ernest Brudenell-Bruce 3rd Marquess Ailesbury [aged 23] and [her sister] Louisa Elizabeth Horsley Beresford Marchioness Ailesbury [aged 20] were married. He the son of Charles Brudenell 1st Marquess Ailesbury [aged 61] and Henrietta Maria Hill.
In 1836 James Graham 4th Duke Montrose [aged 36] and Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 18] were married. He the son of James Graham 3rd Duke Montrose [aged 80] and Caroline Maria Montagu Duchess Montrose.
On 30th December 1836 [her father-in-law] James Graham 3rd Duke Montrose [aged 81] died. His son [her husband] James [aged 37] succeeded 4th Duke Montrose. Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 18] by marriage Duchess Montrose.
On 16th May 1839 Edward Clive 1st Earl Powis [aged 85] died at 45 Berkeley Square, Mayfair. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bromfield. His son Edward [aged 54] succeeded 2nd Earl Powis. [her sister-in-law] Lucy Graham Countess Powis [aged 45] by marriage Countess Powis.
On 13th February 1842 [her daughter] Beatrice Violet Graham was born to [her husband] James Graham 4th Duke Montrose [aged 42] and Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 24]. She married 16th December 1863 her sixth cousin Algernon Greville-Nugent 2nd Baron Greville, son of Fulke Southwell Greville-Nugent 1st Baron Greville and Rosa Emily Nugent Baroness Greville, and had issue.
Adeline Horsey Recollections. In the autumn of 1844 we went to Bretby [Map], the seat of the Earl of Chesterfield [aged 38], where we spent a most enjoyable time. There was a large house-party, among many others the [her husband] Duke [aged 44] and Duchess [aged 26] of Montrose, Mr. [aged 37] and Lady Sophia des Voeux, Lord Alvanley [aged 54], and the Count de Nieukerke, who was the recognised lover of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte [aged 23]. M. de Nieukerke was a very charming man, and he was much struck by my singing, and used to compare me with George Sand's heroine - Consuelo - for I was a very pretty girl with a slight, but fine figure, and long hair that fell in curls below my knees.
Adeline Horsey Recollections. As I have previously stated, I used to see a great deal of Lord Cardigan [aged 50] at my father's house, but he treated me quite like a jeune fille, although I was always asked to the great parties he gave during the Season. In January 1857 I went with my father to Deene, and this visit was destined to change the whole of my life.
We arrived late in the afternoon to find ourselves the additions of a great house-party, and I can picture Lord Cardigan as I saw him then, surrounded by the Duchess of Montrose [aged 30], Baroness Ufford and Mrs. Dudley Ward, who all regarded me with none too friendly eyes. Cardigan told me afterwards that, when I entered the room, he realised at once I was the one woman in the world for him. He was an impulsive character, and he lost no time in letting me see the impression I had made, and I was flattered and delighted to feel that I was loved by him.
After we left Deene, Lord Cardigan followed us to London, and needless to say his marked attentions to me soon became the topic of much spiteful and jealous gossip. Those Early Victorian days were exceptionally conventional, and the Court was still as narrow-minded as when poor Lady Flora Hastings [See Death of Flora Hastings] had been the victim of its lying slander.
On 9th March 1852 [her mother] Charlotte Philadelphia Horsley [aged 78] died. She has a monument at St Andrew's Church, Bolam [Map] commissioned by her only son [her brother] William Horsley-Beresford 3rd Baron Decies [aged 40].
Charlotte Philadelphia Horsley: On 20th January 1774 she was born to Robert Horsley of Bolam House in Northumberland. On 26th July 1810 John Horsley Beresford 2nd Baron Decies and she were married.

On 7th November 1852 [her son] Douglas Graham 5th Duke Montrose was born to [her husband] James Graham 4th Duke Montrose [aged 53] and Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 34]. He married 24th July 1876 his third cousin once removed Violet Hermione Graham Duchess Montrose, daughter of Frederick Ulric Graham 3rd Baronet and Jane Hermione Seymour Lady Graham, and had issue.
On 31st July 1860 [her brother] William Horsley-Beresford 3rd Baron Decies [aged 49] and [her sister-in-law] Catherine Anne Dent Baroness Decies [aged 20] were married. The difference in their ages was 28 years.
On 16th December 1863 [her son-in-law] Algernon Greville-Nugent 2nd Baron Greville [aged 22] and Beatrice Violet Graham [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of James Graham 4th Duke Montrose [aged 64] and Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 45]. They were sixth cousins.
On 1st March 1865 [her father] John Horsley Beresford 2nd Baron Decies [aged 91] died. His son [her brother] William [aged 53] succeeded 3rd Baron Decies of Decies in Waterford and inherited Bolam Hall, Northumberland [Map]. [her sister-in-law] Catherine Anne Dent Baroness Decies [aged 25] by marriage Baroness Decies of Decies in Waterford.
On 30th December 1874 [her husband] James Graham 4th Duke Montrose [aged 75] died. His son Douglas [aged 22] succeeded 5th Duke Montrose.
In 1876 William Stuart Stirling Crawfurd [aged 57] and Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 58] were married.
On 24th July 1876 Douglas Graham 5th Duke Montrose [aged 23] and Violet Hermione Graham Duchess Montrose [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Duchess Montrose. He the son of James Graham 4th Duke Montrose and Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 58]. They were third cousin once removed.
On 6th January 1878 George William Frederick Brudenell 2nd Marquess Ailesbury [aged 73] died at Lockeridge House Savernake, Wiltshire. His brother [her brother-in-law] Ernest [aged 66] succeeded 3rd Marquess Ailesbury, 9th Earl Cardigan, 4th Earl Ailesbury, 3rd Earl Bruce of Whorlton in Yorkshire, 3rd Viscount Savernake of Savernake Forest in Wiltshire, 9th Baron Brudenell of Stonton in Leicestershire. [her sister] Louisa Elizabeth Horsley Beresford Marchioness Ailesbury [aged 63] by marriage Marchioness Ailesbury.
In 1883 [her husband] William Stuart Stirling Crawfurd [aged 64] died.
On 14th October 1891 [her sister] Louisa Elizabeth Horsley Beresford Marchioness Ailesbury [aged 77] died.
Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

In 1894 Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford "Mr Manton" Duchess Montrose [aged 76] died.
Adeline Horsey Recollections. George Bruce, the Duchess's nephew, was a source of great annoyance to her, "Hullo, Auntie Craw!" he used to call out when he saw her on the course. George was known as "The Duffer", but duffer or no, he could say spiteful things which were very much to the point. He always warned me to be very careful of his mother, Lady Ernest Bruce, whom he generally referred to as "Bellona, the goddess of war and discord". They were always quarrelling, and he disliked her intensely.
George Bruce@@ married Lady Evelyn Craven. He afterwards went to Corsica for his health, and he died at Ajaccio in 1868. He was strikingly like Napoleon Bonaparte, and wherever he went in the island the people idolised him on account of his resemblance to the great Emperor.
Adeline Horsey Recollections. Caroline, Duchess of Montrose, was a very well-known figure at Newmarket, Suffolk, but she was highly unpopular, and was once mobbed on the course for having Mr. Crawfurd's horse pulled as there was not enough money on it! She was very much in love with Mr. Crawfurd, whom she afterwards married.
Crawfurd owned a horse called "Corrie Roy", and as the Duchess was nicknamed "Carrie Red", these names were the subject of some amusing doggerel written by Lord Winchilsea ... "Corrie Roy and Carry Red, One for the course, the other for bed, Is not Craw a lucky boy, To have Carry Red and Corrie Roy? ".
