The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 22nd September 1735 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan was born to John Bingham 5th Baronet (age 45) and Anne Vesey Lady Bingham (age 36).

On 21st September 1749 [his father] John Bingham 5th Baronet (age 59) died. His son [his brother] John (age 20) succeeded 6th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

On 27th November 1750 [his brother] John Bingham 6th Baronet (age 22) died unmarried. His brother Charles (age 15) succeeded 7th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

In 1756 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 20) was appointed High Sheriff of Mayo.

In 1761 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 25) was elected MP Mayo.

In February 1761 [his mother] Anne Vesey Lady Bingham (age 61) died.

Before 1762 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 26) and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 21) were married at Bath, Somerset [Map]. She by marriage Lady Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

In 1762 [his daughter] Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer was born to Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 26) and [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 22).

On 4th December 1764 [his son] Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan was born to Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 29) and [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 24).

In 1776 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 40) was created 1st Baron Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo. [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 36) by marriage Baroness Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.

On 6th March 1781 [his son-in-law] George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer (age 22) and [his daughter] Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer (age 19) were married. She the daughter of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 45) and [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 41). He the son of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer (age 46) and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer (age 43).

In 1782 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 46) was elected MP Northampton.

She the daughter of Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg (age 52) and Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg. He the son of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 58) and [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 54).

In 1795 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 59) was created 1st Earl Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo. [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 55) by marriage Countess Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.

On 29th March 1799 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan (age 63) died. His son [his son] Richard (age 34) succeeded 2nd Earl Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo, 2nd Baron Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo, 8th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo. [his daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk (age 29) by marriage Countess Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.

On 27th February 1814 [his former wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan (age 74) died at St James's Palace [Map].
