The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby 1750-1820

In 1750 Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby was born to William Smelt of Bedale (age 34).

In 1754 [her father] William Smelt of Bedale (age 38) died.

On 7th March 1775 Thomas Frankland 6th Baronet (age 24) and Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby (age 25) were married. They were third cousins.

In 1784 [her son] Robert Frankland-Russell 7th Baronet was born to [her husband] Thomas Frankland 6th Baronet (age 33) and Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby (age 34).

On 21st November 1784 [her father-in-law] Thomas Frankland 5th Baronet (age 66) died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. His son [her husband] Thomas (age 34) succeeded 6th Baronet Frankland of Thirkleby in Yorkshire. Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby (age 34) by marriage Lady Frankland of Thirkleby in Yorkshire.

After 1797. All Saints Church, Thirkleby, North Yorkshire [Map]. Grave slab of Mary Trant Otley (age 34), wife of [her uncle] Cornelius Smelt (age 48), aunt of Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby (age 47).

Mary Trant Otley: Around 1763 she was born. On 6th October 1785 Cornelius Smelt and she were married at Richmond, North Yorkshire [Map]. On 5th October 1797 she died. She was buried at All Saints Church, Thirkleby, North Yorkshire [Map] on 9th October 1797.

After 1804. All Saints Church, Thirkleby, North Yorkshire [Map]. Memorial to four of the children of [her husband] Thomas Frankland 6th Baronet (age 53) and Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby (age 54) who died young. Sculpted by John Flaxman (age 48).

In 1815 [her son] Robert Frankland-Russell 7th Baronet (age 31) and [her daughter-in-law] Louisa Anne Murray Lady Thirkleby (age 24) were married. She the daughter of Bishop George Murray.

On 19th May 1820 Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby (age 70) died.

After 1831. All Saints Church, Thirkleby, North Yorkshire [Map]. Memorial to [her former husband] Thomas Frankland 6th Baronet (age 80) and his wife Dorothy Smelt Lady Thirkleby.

On 4th January 1831 [her former husband] Thomas Frankland 6th Baronet (age 80) died at Thirkleby Hall, North Yorkshire. His son [her son] Robert (age 47) succeeded 7th Baronet Frankland of Thirkleby in Yorkshire. [her daughter-in-law] Louisa Anne Murray Lady Thirkleby (age 40) by marriage Lady Frankland of Thirkleby in Yorkshire.
