Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall

The Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall (Chronicon Anglicanum) is an indispensable medieval history that brings to life centuries of English and European affairs through the eyes of a learned Cistercian monk. Ralph of Coggeshall, abbot of the Abbey of Coggeshall in Essex in the early 13th century, continued and expanded his community’s chronicle, documenting events from the Norman Conquest of 1066 into the tumultuous reign of King Henry III. Blending eyewitness testimony, careful compilation, and the monastic commitment to record-keeping, this chronicle offers a rare narrative of political intrigue, royal power struggles, and social upheaval in England and beyond. Ralph’s work captures the reigns of pivotal figures such as Richard I and King John, providing invaluable insights into their characters, decisions, and the forces that shaped medieval rule. More than a simple annal, Chronicon Anglicanum conveys the texture of medieval life and governance, making it a rich source for scholars and readers fascinated by English history, monastic authorship, and the shaping of the medieval world.

Biography of Edward Clere 1536-1606

Paternal Family Tree: Clere

Before 5th November 1459 Blickling Hall, Norfolk [Map] was in the possession of John Fastolf [aged 79].

John Fastolf sold it to Geoffrey Boleyn [aged 53] who made it his country seat.

The estate passed to [his grandmother] Alice Boleyn who married [his grandfather] Robert Clere [aged 13]. Their grandson Edward Clere ran into debt and sold the estate to Henry Hobart 1st Baronet.

Before 15th June 1536 [his father] Admiral John Clere [aged 25] and [his mother] Anne Tyrrell were married. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 15th June 1536 Edward Clere was born to [his father] Admiral John Clere [aged 25] and [his mother] Anne Tyrrell at Blickling Hall, Norfolk [Map].

On 16th December 1554 Edward Clere [aged 18] and Frances Fulmerston [aged 14] were married.

On 21st August 1557 [his father] Admiral John Clere [aged 46] drowned with around ninety of his men whilst attempting to storm the Bishop's Palace, Kirkwall.

In 1561 James Boleyn [aged 68] died. His great-nephew Edward Clere [aged 24], grandson of James' sister [his grandmother] Alice Boleyn, inherited the estate at Blickling, Norfolk. Curiously Edward Clere's mother was Anne Tyrrell, grand-daughter of James Tyrrell who had been executed in 1502, and who had reportedly confessed to the murder of the Princes in the Tower.

He was buried at St Andrew's Church, Blickling [Map] on 6th September 1561. In his will he left he great-niece Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland [aged 27] a basin and gilt ewer and "my written book of the revelations of Saint Bridget".

Around 1563 [his son] Edward Clere was born to Edward Clere [aged 26] and [his wife] Frances Fulmerston [aged 23] at Blickling Hall, Norfolk [Map].

In 1576 [his mother] Anne Tyrrell died.

Before 6th April 1578 Francis Clopton [aged 39] and [his future wife] Agnes Crane [aged 31] were married.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 7th September 1580 Edward Clere [aged 44] and Agnes Crane [aged 33] were married.

On 8th June 1606 Edward Clere [aged 69] died. Chest tomb in St Andrew's Church, Blickling [Map].
