Biography of Edward Dering 5th Baronet 1705-1762

On 17 Jul 1704 [his father] Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet (age 25) and [his mother] Ellen aka Mary Fisher Lady Dering (age 17) were married. She by marriage Lady Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent.

In 1705 Edward Dering 5th Baronet was born to Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet (age 25) and Ellen aka Mary Fisher Lady Dering (age 18).

In 1707 [his mother] Ellen aka Mary Fisher Lady Dering (age 20) died.

On 09 May 1711 [his father] Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet (age 31) was killed in a duel at Tothill Fields [Map]. His son Edward (age 6) succeeded 5th Baronet Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent. The duel, unusually with pistols rather than swords, was with Richard Thornhill with whom Dering had argued in a pub near Hampton Court Palace, Richmond [Map] two days previously; Thornhill had afterwards sent Dering a note challenging him to a duel. Both pistols were fired but only Dering was hit. Richard Thornhill was tried for murder but convicted of the lesser offence of manslaughter. Thornhill was murdered three months later.

On 31 Jan 1722 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 17) matriculated Oriel College, Oxford University.

On 17 Dec 1725 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 20) graduated with a MA from Oriel College, Oxford University.

In 1727 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 22) stood for MP Kent but was unsuccessful.

On 24 Feb 1728 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 23) and Elizabeth Henshaw Lady Dering were married. She by marriage Lady Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent.

On 28 Sep 1732 [his son] Edward Dering 6th Baronet was born to Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 27) and [his wife] Elizabeth Henshaw Lady Dering.

In 1733 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 28) was elected MP Kent unopposed at a by-election. He held the seat until 1754.

On or before 17 Mar 1735 [his wife] Elizabeth Henshaw Lady Dering died. She was buried at St Nicholas' Church, Pluckley on 17 Mar 1735.

Before 11 Sep 1735 Henry Mompesson and [his future wife] Mary Fotherby Lady Dering were married.

On 11 Sep 1735 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 30) and Mary Fotherby Lady Dering were married at St Anne's Church, Soho [Map].

In or before 1756 [his son] Edward Dering 6th Baronet (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Selina Furnese were married.

On 15 Apr 1762 Edward Dering 5th Baronet (age 57) died. He was buried at St Nicholas' Church, Pluckley on 22 Apr 1762. His son [his son] Edward (age 29) succeeded 6th Baronet Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent.
