Biography of Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu -1361

Paternal Family Tree: Montagu

On 18th October 1319 [his father] William Montagu 2nd Baron Montagu (age 44) died at Gascony [Map]. His son [his brother] William (age 18) succeeded 3rd Baron Montagu.

Before 29th August 1338 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and Alice Plantagenet (age 14) were married. She the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton 1st Earl Norfolk (deceased) and Alice Hales Countess Norfolk.

Around 1344 [his daughter] Elizabeth Montagu Countess Suffolk was born to Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and [his wife] Alice Plantagenet (age 20). She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In August 1345 [his mother] Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 70) died. She was buried at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford [Map].

Battle of Crécy

On 26th August 1346 the army of King Edward III of England (age 33) defeated the French army at the Battle of Crécy. The English army was commanded by King Edward III of England, his son Edward "Black Prince" (age 16), Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick (age 33), William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 36) and John Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp Warwick (age 30).

The French army suffered significant casualties. King Philip "Fortunate" VI of France (age 52) was wounded. William de Coucy (age 60) and his son Enguerrand 6th Lord de Coucy (age 33) and were killed.

Charles Valois Count Alençon (age 49) was killed. His son Charles (age 9) succeeded Count Alençon.

Louis Chatillon II Count Blois I Count Chatillon was killed. His son Louis succeeded III Count Blois.

Louis Dampierre II Count Nevers I Count Flanders (age 42) was killed. His son Louis (age 15) succeeded III Count Nevers, II Count Flanders.

King John I of Bohemia (age 50) was killed. His son Charles (age 30) succeeded IV King Bohemia.

Rudolph "Valiant" Metz I Duke Lorraine (age 26) was killed. His son John succeeded I Duke Lorraine.

Jean IV de Harcourt (age 39) was killed.

On 20th November 1348 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu was created 1st Baron Montagu by writ of summons.

On 2nd February 1349 [his daughter] Joan Montagu Countess Suffolk was born to Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and [his wife] Alice Plantagenet (age 25). She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

After 1352 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and Joan Unknown were married.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Before 30th January 1352 [his wife] Alice Plantagenet (age 28) died at Bungay, Suffolk. She had been assaulted by her husband Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu for which he was indicted.

Before February 1359 [his daughter] Audrey Montagu died.

Before February 1359 [his son] Edward Montagu died.

Before 1361 [his son-in-law] Walter Ufford (age 17) and [his daughter] Elizabeth Montagu Countess Suffolk (age 16) were married. She would later marry his brother [his future son-in-law] William Ufford 2nd Earl Suffolk (age 22); an example of Married to Two Siblings. He the son of Robert Ufford 1st Earl Suffolk (age 62) and Margaret Norwich Countess Suffolk (age 74).

Before July 1361 [his daughter] Elizabeth Montagu Countess Suffolk (age 17) died.

On 14th July 1361 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu died. Baron Montagu abeyant between his daughters [his daughter] Joan Montagu Countess Suffolk (age 12) and [his daughter] Audrey Montagu 2nd Baroness Montagu.

[his son] Edward Montagu was born to Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and Alice Plantagenet. He a great grandson of King Edward I of England.

The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.
