Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Before 17th September 1643 Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard was born to [his father] Charles Howard [aged 28] and [his mother] Frances Courthope at Great Bookham, Surrey. On 17th September 1643 Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard was baptised at Great Bookham, Surrey.
On 20th March 1672 [his father] Charles Howard [aged 57] died at Surrey.
On 8th July 1673 Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard [aged 29] and Philadelphia Pelham Baroness Howard [aged 18] were married. They were fifth cousin once removed.
On 26th April 1681 Charles Howard 3rd Earl Nottingham [aged 70] died. Earl Nottingham extinct. His first cousin twice removed Francis [aged 37] succeeded 5th Baron Howard of Effingham. [his wife] Philadelphia Pelham Baroness Howard [aged 26] by marriage Baroness Howard of Effingham.
In 1682 [his son] Thomas Howard 6th Baron Howard was born to Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard [aged 38] and [his wife] Philadelphia Pelham Baroness Howard [aged 27]. He married 25th February 1707 Mary Wentworth and had issue.
Before 20th October 1683 [his son] Francis Howard 1st Earl of Effingham was born to Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard [aged 40] and [his wife] Philadelphia Pelham Baroness Howard [aged 29]. On 20th October 1683 Francis Howard 1st Earl of Effingham was baptised.
On 13th August 1685 [his wife] Philadelphia Pelham Baroness Howard [aged 30] died.
In 1687 Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard [aged 43] was appointed Governor of Virginia.
On 20th January 1690 Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard [aged 46] and Susan Felton Baroness Howard were married. She by marriage Baroness Howard of Effingham.
On 30th March 1695 Francis Howard 5th Baron Howard [aged 51] died at Lingfield, Surrey. He was buried at St Giles' in the Fields Church [Map]. His son Thomas [aged 13] succeeded 6th Baron Howard of Effingham.
