Biography of Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale 1581-1655

Paternal Family Tree: Leke

In or before 1581 [his father] Francis Leke (age 38) and [his mother] Frances Swift (age 50) were married.

In 1581 Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale was born to Francis Leke (age 39) and Frances Swift (age 51).

In 1610 [his mother] Frances Swift (age 80) died.

After 1610 [his father] Francis Leke (age 68) and [his step-mother] Mary Egioke Lady Clifton were married.

On 25th May 1611 Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale (age 30) was created 1st Baronet Leke of Sutton in Derbyshire. [his future wife] Anne Carey Lady Leke (age 25) by marriage Lady Leke of Sutton in Derbyshire.

Before 1612 Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale (age 30) and Anne Carey Lady Leke (age 26) were married. They were fifth cousins.

In 1612 [his son] Nicholas Leke 2nd Earl Scarsdale was born to Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale (age 31) and [his wife] Anne Carey Lady Leke (age 26).

In October 1624 [his wife] Anne Carey Lady Leke (age 39) died.

In 1626 [his father] Francis Leke (age 84) died.

In 1628 Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale (age 47) was created 1st Baron Deincourt of Sutton.

On 5th May 1643 [his son] Charles Leke was killed at Lansdown Hill, Bath.

Battle of Lansdowne

On 5th July 1643 the Battle of Lansdowne was an inconclusive battle between a Royalist army commanded by Ralph Hopton 1st Baron Hopton (age 47) and a Parliamentary Army commanded by William Waller (age 46) at Lansdown Hill, Bath. The two commanders being old friends.

[his son] Edward Leke was killed.

Bevil Grenville (age 48) was killed at the at the head of the Cornish infantry as it reached the top of Lansdown Hill. He received a blow to the head with a pole-axe and was taken to the rectory at nearby Cold Ashton, Gloucestershire where he died.

In 1645 Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale (age 64) was created 1st Earl Scarsdale.

In 1655 Francis Leke 1st Earl Scarsdale (age 74) died. In 1655 His son [his son] Nicholas (age 43) succeeded 2nd Earl Scarsdale, 2nd Baron Deincourt of Sutton, 2nd Baronet Leke of Sutton in Derbyshire. Frances Rich Countess Scarsdale by marriage Countess Scarsdale.
