Biography of Francis Palmes of Lindley 1554-1613

In or before 1554 [his father] Francis Palmes of Lindley and [his mother] Margaret Corbet were married.

Around 1554 Francis Palmes of Lindley was born to Francis Palmes of Lindley and Margaret Corbet.

In 1560 [his father] Francis Palmes of Lindley died.

In or before 1580 Francis Palmes of Lindley (age 25) and Mary Hadnall were married. They had six sons and five daughters.

In 1580 [his son] Guy Palmes of Naburn was born to Francis Palmes of Lindley (age 26) and [his wife] Mary Hadnall.

In 1586 Francis Palmes of Lindley (age 32) was elected MP Knaresborough.

In August 1603 during a plague in London the royal court moved to Basing House, Old Basing. Francis Palmes of Lindley (age 49) entertained courtiers at his house nearby at Lancelevy, Sherfield on Loddon. The party included Lady Anne Clifford (age 13), her mother Margaret Clifford (age 43), Countess of Cumberland and Elizabeth Bourchier, Countess of Bath, who used Lancelevy as a base to visit Anne of Denmark (age 28) and Arbella Stuart (age 28).

In 1613 Francis Palmes of Lindley (age 59) as sheriff, received Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland at Silchester, Hampshire [Map] and escorted her to Basingstoke, Hampshire, where she knighted him.

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
