Biography of George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester 1722-1800

On 7th June 1722 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester was born to Norton Powlett (age 41).

On 6th June 1741 [his father] Norton Powlett (age 60) died.

In 1758 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 35) was appointed Gentleman Usher to Frederick Louis Hanover Prince of Wales and Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales (age 38) which office he held until her death in 1772.

In 1761 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 38) was appointed High Sheriff of Hampshire.

On 7th January 1762 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 39) and Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester were married.

On 27th January 1764 [his son] Charles Burroughs-Paulet 13th Marquess Winchester was born to George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 41) and [his wife] Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1765 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 42) was elected MP Winchester.

On 23rd December 1765 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 43) was appointed Groom Porter to King George III (age 27) which office he held until it was abolished on 14 November 1782.

Around 1767 [his daughter] Urania Paulet Marchioness Clanricarde was born to George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 44) and [his wife] Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester.

On 31st March 1767 [his son] Henry Paulet was born to George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 44) and [his wife] Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester.

On 17th March 1785 [his son-in-law] Henry Burgh 1st Marquess Clarincade (age 43) and [his daughter] Urania Paulet Marchioness Clanricarde (age 18) were married. The difference in their ages was 24 years. She the daughter of George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 62) and [his wife] Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester. He the son of John Smith Burgh 11th Earl Clanricarde and Hester Amelia Vincent Countess Clanricarde.

On 25th December 1794 Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton (age 74) died without male issue. Duke Bolton extinct. His third cousin once removed George (age 72) succeeded 12th Marquess Winchester, 12th Earl Wiltshire, 12th Baron St John. [his wife] Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester. Most of his estates including Bolton Castle [Map] were inherited by his elder brother's illegitimate daughter Jean Mary (age 43) whose husband Thomas Orde (age 54) added the surname Powlett to his own.

In 1796 [his wife] Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester died.

On 22nd April 1800 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester (age 77) died. His son [his son] Charles (age 36) succeeded 13th Marquess Winchester, 13th Earl Wiltshire, 13th Baron St John.

On 29th October 1950 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester was appointed an Extra Gentleman Usher to Frederick, Prince of Wales, and served until the Prince's death in 1751.
