The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

In 1818 [his father] Constantine Phipps 1st Marquess Normanby [aged 20] and [his mother] Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby [aged 19] were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Henry Phipps 1st Earl Mulgrave [aged 62] and [his grandmother] Martha Sophia Thomson Maling Countess Mulgrave.

On 23rd July 1819 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby was born to [his father] Constantine Phipps 1st Marquess Normanby [aged 22] and [his mother] Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby [aged 21]. He a great x 4 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 7th April 1831 [his grandfather] Henry Phipps 1st Earl Mulgrave [aged 76] died. His son [his father] Constantine [aged 33] succeeded 2nd Earl Mulgrave, 2nd Viscount Normanby, 4th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 2nd Baron Mulgrave. [his mother] Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby [aged 32] by marriage Countess Mulgrave.

In 1838 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 18] was appointed Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.

In 1844 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 24] and Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 27] were married. He the son of Constantine Phipps 1st Marquess Normanby [aged 46] and Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby [aged 45].

On 29th August 1846 [his son] Constantine Phipps 3rd Marquess Normanby was born to George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 27] and [his wife] Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 30]. He was educated at the University of Durham. He married 30th December 1903 Gertrude Stansfeld Foster Marchioness Normanby and had issue.

In 1847 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 27] was elected MP Scarborough which seat he held until 1851.

On 31st January 1850 [his daughter] Katherine Louisa Phipps Countess Ellesmere was born to George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 30] and [his wife] Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 34]. She married 9th December 1868 Francis Egerton 3rd Earl Ellesmere, son of George Leveson-Gower aka Egerton 2nd Earl Ellesmere and Mary Louisa Campbell Countess Ellesmere, and had issue.

In 1851 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 31] was appointed Comptroller of the Household by John Russell 1st Earl Russell [aged 58].

In 1852 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 32] was appointed Treasurer of the Household which position he held until 1858.

In 1858 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 38] was appointed Governor of Nova Scotia. During his term he hosted King Edward VII of the United Kingdom [aged 16] and Prince Alfred Windsor [aged 13] at Government House.

On 28th July 1863 [his father] Constantine Phipps 1st Marquess Normanby [aged 66] died. His son George [aged 44] succeeded 2nd Marquess Normanby, 3rd Earl Mulgrave, 3rd Viscount Normanby, 5th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 3rd Baron Mulgrave. [his wife] Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 47] by marriage Marchioness Normanby.

On 9th December 1868 [his son-in-law] Francis Egerton 3rd Earl Ellesmere [aged 21] and Katherine Louisa Phipps Countess Ellesmere [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Countess Ellesmere. She the daughter of George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 49] and Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 52]. He the son of George Leveson-Gower aka Egerton 2nd Earl Ellesmere and Mary Louisa Campbell Countess Ellesmere [aged 43].

In 1869 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 49] was appointed Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms.

In 1871 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 51] was appointed Governor of New Zealand which position he held until 1874 when he was appointed Governor of New Zealand.

In 1879 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 59] was appointed Governor of Victoria.

On 20th October 1882 [his mother] Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby [aged 84] died.

On 26th January 1885 [his wife] Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 69] died.

On 3rd April 1890 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 70] died at Brighton. His son Constantine [aged 43] succeeded 3rd Marquess Normanby, 4th Earl Mulgrave, 4th Viscount Normanby, 6th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 4th Baron Mulgrave.
