Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

Biography of Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford 1599-1673

Around 1599 Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford was born to [his father] John Grey and [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 22).

Before October 1611 [his father] John Grey and [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 34) were married. They were second cousin once removed.

In October 1611 [his father] John Grey died.

On 26th July 1614 [his grandfather] Henry Grey 1st Baron Grey of Groby (age 67) died. His grandson Henry (age 15) succeeded 2nd Baron Grey of Groby.

On 19th July 1620 Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 21) and Anne Cecil (age 24) were married. She by marriage Baroness Grey of Groby. She the daughter of William Cecil 2nd Earl Exeter (age 54) and Elizabeth Drury Countess Exeter (age 42). They were fourth cousins.

In 1622 [his daughter] Elizabeth Grey Baroness Delamer was born to Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 23) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 26). She married before 17th April 1648 George Booth 1st Baron Delamer and had issue.

Around 1623 [his son] Thomas Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 24) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 27). He married 4th June 1646 his half sixth cousin Dorothy Bourchier, daughter of Edward Bourchier 4th Earl Bath and Dorothy St John Countess Bath, and had issue.

Around 1624 [his son] Anchitell Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 25) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 28). He married Anne Willoughby Lady Aston, daughter of Henry Willoughby 1st Baronet and Elizabeth Knollys.

On 1st January 1624 Henry de Vere 18th Earl of Oxford (age 30) and [his sister-in-law] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 28) were married. She by marriage Countess of Oxford. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] William Cecil 2nd Earl Exeter (age 58) and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Drury Countess Exeter (age 45). He the son of Edward de Vere 17th Earl of Oxford and Elizabeth Trentham Maid of Honour Countess of Oxford. They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 1625 [his son] John Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 26) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 29). He married before 10th June 1685 his fourth cousin twice removed Catherine Ward, daughter of Edward Ward 7th Baron Dudley 2nd Baron Ward and Frances Brereton, and had issue.

On 7th February 1626 Thomas Howard 1st Earl Berkshire (age 38) was created 1st Earl Berkshire. [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Cecil Countess Berkshire (age 30) by marriage Countess Berkshire.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. On 12th November 1629 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 30) and [his sister-in-law] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 33) were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] William Cecil 2nd Earl Exeter (age 63) and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Drury Countess Exeter (age 51).

In or before 1630 [his daughter] Diana Grey Countess Elgin and Ailesbury was born to Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 30) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 33). She married 16th February 1645 her fifth cousin Robert Bruce 2nd Earl Elgin 1st Earl Ailesbury, son of Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin and Anne Chichester, and had issue.

On 21st June 1633 Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 34) was created 1st Earl Elgin. [his sister-in-law] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 37) by marriage Countess Elgin.

On 9th August 1642 [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 65) died.

Battle of Stratton

On 16th May 1643 Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 44) fought for the Parliamentary army at Stratton, Cornwall.

On 16th February 1645 [his son-in-law] Robert Bruce 2nd Earl Elgin 1st Earl Ailesbury (age 18) and [his daughter] Diana Grey Countess Elgin and Ailesbury (age 15) were married. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 46) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 49). He the son of Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 46) and Anne Chichester. They were fifth cousins.

On 4th June 1646 [his son] Thomas Grey (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Dorothy Bourchier (age 19) were married. She the daughter of Edward Bourchier 4th Earl Bath and Dorothy St John Countess Bath. He the son of Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 47) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 50). They were half sixth cousins.

Before 17th April 1648 [his son-in-law] George Booth 1st Baron Delamer (age 25) and [his daughter] Elizabeth Grey Baroness Delamer (age 26) were married. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Earl Stamford (age 49) and [his wife] Anne Cecil Countess Stamford (age 52).

On 26th February 1654 [his sister-in-law] Diana Cecil Countess of Oxford and Elgin (age 58) died. She was buried at the Ailesbury Mausoleum, St Mary's Church, Maulden [Map] which her husband Thomas Bruce 1st Earl Elgin (age 55) commissioned.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.
