Around 1288 [his father] Hugh Audley 1st Baron Audley of Stratton Audley (age 21) and [his mother] Iseult Mortimer were married. They were half third cousin twice removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King John of England.

Around 1291 Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester was born to Hugh Audley 1st Baron Audley of Stratton Audley (age 24) and Iseult Mortimer at Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

Marriage of Piers Gaveston and Margaret de Clare

On 2nd November 1307 Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 23) and [his future wife] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester were married. Arranged by King Edward II of England (age 23). Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester grand-daughter of Edward I through his daughter Joan and, as such, significantly higher than Gaveston in the nobility. She the daughter of Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford.

In 1316 Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 25) was appointed High Sheriff of Rutlandshire.

On 20th September 1317 Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 26) was created 1st Baron Audley of Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire 1317. [his wife] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester by marriage Baroness Audley of Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire 1317.

Around 1318 [his daughter] Margaret Audley Countess Stafford was born to Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 27) and [his wife] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester. She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

Battle of Boroughbridge

On 16th March 1322 the rebel army led by Thomas Plantagenet 2nd Earl of Leicester, 2nd Earl Lancaster, Earl of Salisbury and Lincoln (age 44) attempted to cross the bridge over the River Ure (between Ripon and York) at Boroughbridge Bridge [Map]. Their path was blocked by forces loyal to the King led by Andrew Harclay 1st Earl Carlisle (age 52). Bartholomew Badlesmere 1st Baron Badlesmere (age 46), [his uncle] Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March (age 34), John Botetort 1st Baron Botetort (age 57) and John Maltravers 1st Baron Maltravers (age 32) fought for the rebels. Roger Clifford 2nd Baron Clifford (age 22), Nicholas Longford (age 37), Thomas Plantagenet 2nd Earl of Leicester, 2nd Earl Lancaster, Earl of Salisbury and Lincoln, John Mowbray 2nd Baron Mowbray (age 35) were captured.

Warin Lisle (age 51) was hanged after the battle at Pontefract [Map].

Following the battle Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 31) and his wife [his wife] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester were both imprisoned. He in Nottingham Castle [Map] and she in Sempringham Priory [Map].

John Clinton 2nd Baron Clinton (age 22), Ralph Greystoke 1st Baron Greystoke (age 22), William Latimer 2nd Baron Latimer of Corby (age 46), Robert Lisle 1st Baron Lisle (age 34), Domhnall Mar II Earl of Mar (age 29) and Peter Saltmarsh (age 42) fought for the King.

Adam Everingham 1st Baron Everingham of Laxton (age 43) was captured.

Humphrey Bohun 4th Earl Hereford 3rd Earl Essex (age 46) was killed. His son John (age 15) succeeded 5th Earl Hereford, 4th Earl Essex.

Piers Grandison 2nd Baron Grandison (age 31) fough for the rebels, and was captured.

[his father] Hugh Audley 1st Baron Audley of Stratton Audley (age 55) surrendered before the battle and was imprisoned in Wallingford Castle [Map] for the rest of his life

John Giffard 2nd Baron Giffard Brimpsfield (age 34) was captured.

In 1327 Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 36) was appointed High Sheriff of Rutlandshire.

Before 6th July 1336 [his son-in-law] Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 34) and [his daughter] Margaret Audley Countess Stafford (age 18) were married. She by marriage Baroness Stafford. She the daughter of Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 45) and [his wife] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester. They were fifth cousins. She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

Before 6th July 1336 [his son-in-law] Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 34) abducted [his daughter] Margaret Audley Countess Stafford (age 18). She being the heir of the very wealthy Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 45); considerably more wealthy than Ralph. King Edward III of England (age 23) was sympathetic despite the complaint of her father since Ralph had been one of King Edward III's key supporters during the plot to arrest [his uncle] Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March. Margaret's father was subsequently created Earl as a quid pro quo.

1337 Creation of Earls

In January 1337 King Edward III of England (age 24) created a number of new Earldom's probably in preparation for his forthcoming war against France ...

William Montagu 1st Earl Salisbury (age 36) was created 1st Earl Salisbury. Catherine Grandison Countess of Salisbury (age 33) by marriage Countess Salisbury.

William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 27) was created 1st Earl of Northampton. Elizabeth Badlesmere Countess Northampton (age 24) by marriage Countess of Northampton.

Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 46) was created 1st Earl Gloucester probably as compensation for his daughter [his daughter] Margaret Audley Countess Stafford (age 19) having been abducted by [his son-in-law] Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford (age 35).

Robert Ufford 1st Earl Suffolk (age 38) was created 1st Earl Suffolk. Margaret Norwich Countess Suffolk (age 51) by marriage Countess Suffolk.

Around 6th April 1342 [his wife] Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester died.

On 10th November 1347 Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 56) died at Tonbridge, Kent [Map]. He was buried at Tonbridge Priory, Kent [Map]. Earl Gloucester extinct. Baron Audley of Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire 1317dormant.
