Published March 2025. The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

After 1578 [his father] John Hotham of Scorborough (age 37) and Mary Goring (age 23) were married.

On 10 Jan 1585 [his father] John Hotham of Scorborough (age 44) and [his step-mother] Jane Legard (age 17) were married. The difference in their ages was 27 years.

Around Jul 1589 John Hotham 1st Baronet was born to John Hotham of Scorborough (age 48) and Juliana Stanhope.

In 1605 [his daughter] Frances Hotham was born to John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 15).

On 16 Feb 1607 John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 17) and Katherine Rodes were married. She brought a dowry of 1,000 marks. They he had two sons and two daughters all of whom predeceased their father.

On 15 Jun 1609 [his father] John Hotham of Scorborough (age 68) died.

In 1610 [his son] John Hotham was born to John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 20) and [his wife] Katherine Rodes.

Before 16 Jul 1614 [his wife] Katherine Rodes died. The date based on the second marriage of her husband John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 25).

On 16 Jul 1614 John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 25) and Anne Rokeby were married.

On 12 May 1615 [his son] Charles Hotham was born to John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 25) in Scorborough and [his wife] Anne Rokeby.

In 1622 John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 32) was created 1st Baronet Hotham of Scorborough in Yorkshire.

In or before 1629 [his son-in-law] Philip Stapleton (age 25) and [his daughter] Frances Hotham (age 23) were married.

On 27 Oct 1631 John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 42) and Katherine Bamburgh were married.

Before 21 Mar 1632 [his son] John Hotham (age 22) and [his daughter-in-law] Frances Wray (age 20) were married.

On 31 Aug 1634 [his wife] Katherine Bamburgh died.

In 1636 [his daughter] Frances Hotham (age 31) died.

Trial and Execution of the Hothams

In Apr 1643 [his son] John Hotham (age 33) joined his troops with the Parliamentarian forces in Lincolnshire. The bad behaviour of Hotham's troops, coupled with what appeared to be attempts by Hotham to co-opt the Parliamentarian officers, raised suspicions with then Colonel Oliver Cromwell (age 43) and John Hutchinson, the governor of Nottingham Castle. They denounced him to the Parliamentary Committee of Safety. In summer 1643 his arrest was ordered. He fled to Nottingham then attempted to travel to Hull. He was arrested with his father John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 53).

In Dec 1644 Parliament decided to execute the Hothams, father and son, John Hotham 1st Baronet (age 55) and [his son] John Hotham (age 34).

On 01 Jan 1645 John Hotham was beheaded for treason by Parliamentarians at Tower Hill [Map]. His father was executed the next day.

On 02 Jan 1645 John Hotham 1st Baronet was beheaded for treason by Parliamentarians; his son having been executed the previous day. His grandson [his grandson] John (age 12) succeeded 2nd Baronet Hotham of Scorborough in Yorkshire.

Diary of Isabella Twysden 1645. 02 Jan 1645. The 2 of Janu Sr Jo: hothum (age 55) (father to Mr hothum) was beheaded on tower hill [Map].

John Evelyn's Diary. 18 Aug 1654. Hence, we passed through a fenny but rich country to Hull [Map], situated like Calais [Map], modernly and strongly fortified with three block-houses of brick and earth. It has a good market place and harbor for ships. Famous also (or rather infamous) is this town for Hotham's refusing entrance to his Majesty. The water-house is worth seeing. And here ends the south of Yorkshire.
