Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 24th April 1851 [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley (age 34) and Selina Constance de Burgh Baroness Ward (age 21) were married. She by marriage Baroness Ward of Birmingham; she died seven months later.

On 21st November 1865 [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley (age 48) and [his mother] Georgina Moncrieffe Countess Dudley (age 19) were married. The difference in their ages was 29 years.

On 20th March 1870 John Hubert Ward was born to [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley (age 52) and [his mother] Georgina Moncrieffe Countess Dudley (age 23).

On 7th May 1885 [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley (age 68) died at Dudley House Park Lane. His son [his brother] William (age 17) succeeded 2nd Earl of Dudley of Dudley Castle in Staffordshire, 12th Baron Ward of Birmingham.

In 1891 [his brother] William Humble Ward 2nd Earl of Dudley (age 23) and [his sister-in-law] Rachel Anne Gurney Countess Dudley (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess of Dudley of Dudley Castle in Staffordshire. He the son of [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley and [his mother] Georgina Moncrieffe Countess Dudley (age 44).

On 5th January 1895 [his brother-in-law] Frederic Glyn 4th Baron Wolverton (age 30) and [his sister] Edith Amelia Ward Baroness Wolverton (age 22) were married. She by marriage Baroness Wolverton. She the daughter of [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley and [his mother] Georgina Moncrieffe Countess Dudley (age 48).

On 11th January 1900 John Hubert Ward (age 29) was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Worcestershire Yeomanry (The Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars). He served in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901 as an aide to Major General John Palmer Brabazon.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

In 1901 John Hubert Ward (age 30) was the Assistant Private Secretary to the Financial Secretary to the War Office, Edward George Villiers Stanley 17th Earl of Derby (age 35).

In April 1908 the engagement between John Hubert Ward (age 38) and [his future wife] Jean Templeton Reid (age 23) was annouced. She the daughter of Whitelaw Reid, American ambassador to the United Kingdom.

On 23rd June 1908 John Hubert Ward (age 38) and Jean Templeton Reid (age 23) were married at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. He the son of William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley and Georgina Moncrieffe Countess Dudley (age 61).

In 1913 [his sister-in-law] Rachel Anne Gurney Countess Dudley (age 45) commissioned a new reredos at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Great Witley [Map] from Salviati of Venice. The three lamps hanging in the sanctuary were given by the Countess in thanks for her [his brother] husband (age 45) and his two brothers [John Hubert Ward (age 42) and [his brother] Robert Arthur Ward (age 41)] returning safely from the Boer War. The initials on the mosaics appear to be those of the three brothers.

On 15th February 1924 Lionel Monkton (age 62) died. His wife [his future sister-in-law] Gertie Millar (age 44) married [his brother] William Humble Ward 2nd Earl of Dudley (age 56) two months later.

On 30th April 1924 [his brother] William Humble Ward 2nd Earl of Dudley (age 56) and [his sister-in-law] Gertrude "Gertie" Millar Countess of Dudley (age 45) were married. She by marriage Countess of Dudley of Dudley Castle in Staffordshire. He the son of [his father] William Ward 1st Earl of Dudley and [his mother] Georgina Moncrieffe Countess Dudley (age 77).

On 2nd December 1928 John Hubert Ward (age 58) died.

On 1st May 1962 [his former wife] Jean Templeton Reid (age 77) died.
