Biography of John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich 1744-1814

Paternal Family Tree: Montagu

On 14th March 1741 [his father] John Montagu 4th Earl Sandwich [aged 22] and [his mother] Dorothy Fane Countess Sandwich [aged 23] were married. She by marriage Countess Sandwich.

On 26th January 1744 John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich was born to [his father] John Montagu 4th Earl Sandwich [aged 25] and [his mother] Dorothy Fane Countess Sandwich [aged 26].

Around 24th January 1766 [his uncle] Charles Fane 2nd Viscount Fane [aged 58] died without issue. Viscount Fane and Baron Fane of Loughguyre in the County of Limerick extinct. His estates were divided between his surviving sisters [his aunt] Mary Fane and [his mother] Dorothy Fane Countess Sandwich [aged 48].

On 1st March 1766 John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 22] and Elizabeth Montague-Dunk were married. She the daughter of George Montagu Dunk 2nd Earl Halifax [aged 49]. He the son of John Montagu 4th Earl Sandwich [aged 47] and Dorothy Fane Countess Sandwich [aged 48]. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 3rd April 1767 [his son] John George Montagu was born to John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 23] and [his wife] Elizabeth Montague-Dunk.

In 1768 [his wife] Elizabeth Montague-Dunk died. She was buried at All Saints Church, Barnwell [Map].

On 25th April 1772 John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 28] and Maria Henrietta Powlett were married. She the daughter of Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton [aged 51] and Katherine Lowther Duchess of Bolton [aged 36]. He the son of John Montagu 4th Earl Sandwich [aged 53] and Dorothy Fane Countess Sandwich [aged 55].

On 4th February 1773 [his son] George Montagu 6th Earl Sandwich was born to John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 29] and [his wife] Maria Henrietta Powlett. He married 9th July 1804 Louisa Lowry-Corry Countess of Sandwich, daughter of Armar Lowry-Corry 1st Earl Belmore and Harriet Hobart Viscountess Belmore, and had issue.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

In 1774 [his daughter] Mary Montagu Viscountess Templetown was born to John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 29] and [his wife] Maria Henrietta Powlett. She married 7th October 1796 John Upton 2nd Baron Templetown, son of Clotworthy Upton 1st Baron Templetown and Elizabeth Boughton Baroness Templetown.

On 9th August 1777 [his daughter] Henrietta Susanah Montagu was born to John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 33] and [his wife] Maria Henrietta Powlett at Hinchinbrooke House [Map]. She married after 3rd May 1798 William James Comte d'Arran and had issue.

On 30th March 1779 [his wife] Maria Henrietta Powlett died. She was buried at All Saints Church, Barnwell [Map].

On 29th November 1790 [his son] John George Montagu [aged 23] died. He was buried at All Saints Church, Barnwell [Map].

On 30th April 1792 [his father] John Montagu 4th Earl Sandwich [aged 73] died. He was buried at All Saints Church, Barnwell [Map]. His son John [aged 48] succeeded 5th Earl Sandwich.

On 7th October 1796 [his son-in-law] John Upton 2nd Baron Templetown [aged 24] and Mary Montagu Viscountess Templetown [aged 22] were married. She by marriage Baroness Templetown of Templetown in Antrim. She the daughter of John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 52] and Maria Henrietta Powlett.

On 17th July 1797 [his mother] Dorothy Fane Countess Sandwich [aged 80] died. She was buried at All Saints Church, Barnwell [Map].

After 3rd May 1798 [his son-in-law] William James Comte d'Arran [aged 20] and Henrietta Susanah Montagu [aged 20] were married. She the daughter of John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 54] and Maria Henrietta Powlett.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 9th July 1804 George Montagu 6th Earl Sandwich [aged 31] and Louisa Lowry-Corry Countess of Sandwich [aged 23] were married. She the daughter of Armar Lowry-Corry 1st Earl Belmore and Harriet Hobart Viscountess Belmore [aged 42]. He the son of John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 60] and Maria Henrietta Powlett.

On 6th June 1814 John Montagu 5th Earl Sandwich [aged 70] died. He was buried at All Saints Church, Barnwell [Map]. His son George [aged 41] succeeded 6th Earl Sandwich. Louisa Lowry-Corry Countess of Sandwich [aged 33] by marriage Countess Sandwich.
