Maternal Family Tree: Margaret Donnington Countess Bath 1509-1561
John Mordaunt 1st was born to [his father] Henry Mordaunt 4th Baron Mordaunt and [his mother] Margaret Compton Baroness Mordaunt.
On 16th June 1601 [his grandfather] Lewis Mordaunt 3rd Baron Mordaunt (age 62) died at Drayton, Northamptonshire [Map]. His son [his father] Henry (age 34) succeeded 4th Baron Mordaunt.
He was buried at All Saints Church, Turvey [Map] where he has a black-painted alabaster pall and black marble slab. The Mordaunt crest appears to have changed to an African woman.
Henry Mordaunt 4th Baron Mordaunt: In 1567 he was born to Lewis Mordaunt 3rd Baron Mordaunt. Before 1608 Henry Mordaunt 4th Baron Mordaunt and Margaret Compton Baroness Mordaunt were married. She by marriage Baroness Mordaunt. She the daughter of Henry Compton 1st Baron Compton and Anne Spencer Countess Dorset. In 1608 Henry Mordaunt 4th Baron Mordaunt died. His son John succeeded 5th Baron Mordaunt.
Before 1608 [his father] Henry Mordaunt 4th Baron Mordaunt (age 40) and [his mother] Margaret Compton Baroness Mordaunt were married. She by marriage Baroness Mordaunt. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Henry Compton 1st Baron Compton and [his grandmother] Anne Spencer Countess Dorset.
In 1608 [his father] Henry Mordaunt 4th Baron Mordaunt (age 41) died. His son John succeeded 5th Baron Mordaunt.
Before 1621 John Mordaunt 1st and Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough (age 17) were married.
On 15th November 1621 [his son] Henry Mordaunt 2nd Earl Peterborough was born to John Mordaunt 1st and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough (age 18). He married 1644 Penelope O'Brien Countess Peterborough, daughter of Barnabas O'Brien 6th Earl Thomond and Anne or Mary Fermor, and had issue.
On 18th June 1626 [his son] John Mordaunt 1st Viscount Mordaunt was born to John Mordaunt 1st and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough (age 23) at Lowick, Northamptonshire. He married 7th May 1657 his second cousin once removed Elizabeth Carey Viscountess Mordaunt and had issue.
On 9th March 1628 John Mordaunt 1st was created 1st Earl Peterborough. [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough (age 25) by marriage Countess Peterborough.
Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 18th June 1642 John Mordaunt 1st died. His son Henry (age 20) succeeded 2nd Earl Peterborough, 6th Baron Mordaunt.
In 1671 [his former wife] Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough (age 68) died.
[his daughter] Sophia Mordaunt was born to John Mordaunt 1st and Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough. She married before 1707 James Hamilton of Bangor in County Down and had issue.
[his daughter] Elizabeth Mordaunt Baroness Howard was born to John Mordaunt 1st and Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough. She married 21st July 1646 her half fourth cousin once removed Thomas Howard 2nd Baron Howard, son of Edward Howard 1st Baron Howard and Mary Boteler Baroness Howard.
