The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Before 29th August 1600 [his father] John Stawell of Cothelstone Manor and [his mother] Elizabeth Tuchet were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] George Tuchet 1st Earl Castlehaven (age 49) and [his grandmother] Lucy Mervyn Baroness Audley and Tuchet.

On 29th August 1600 John Stawell was born to John Stawell of Cothelstone Manor and Elizabeth Tuchet.

In 1604 [his father] John Stawell of Cothelstone Manor died.

Before May 1612 Joseph Killigrew (age 19) and [his future wife] Elizabeth Hext (age 20) were married.

In December 1617 John Stawell (age 17) and Elizabeth Hext (age 25) were married.

In 1640 the Dunch family sold Avebury Manor, Wiltshire [Map] to John Stawell (age 39)

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1640 William Dunch sold the manor of Avebury, Wiltshire [Map] to John Stawell (age 39). Ralph's estates were sequestered after the Civil War and sold to George Long. Ralph recovered the estates at the Restoration. Ralph's son George inherited the manor in 1662. When George died in 1669 his brother [his son] Ralph Stawell 1st Baron Stawell inherited the manor. Ralph died in 1689 and his son [his grandson] John Stawell 2nd Baron Stawell inherited the manor. He died three years later at which time the manor was sold to Richard Holford.

Around 1641 [his son] Ralph Stawell 1st Baron Stawell was born to John Stawell (age 40) and [his wife] Elizabeth Hext (age 49).

In 1646 John Stawell (age 45) was captured at Exeter, Devon [Map] and imprisoned at the Tower of London [Map] until 1653.

In 1646 Avebury Manor, Wiltshire [Map] was sequestered when John Stawell (age 45) was accused of treason. It was sold to George Long in 1652 but restored to Stawell in 1660 on his release from the Tower of London.

In 1662 [his mother] Elizabeth Tuchet died.

On 21st February 1662 John Stawell (age 61) died.
