Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Life of Lady Magdalen Viscountess Montagu. The most Hoble and Vertuous Lady Magdalen Viscountesse Montague, was borne in England, of most Noble & Catholike parents, at Naward Castell [Map], the Mansion-house of her Father, scituat in the County of Cumberland, not far from the borders of Scotland, the yeare of Christ 1538 the 20 of January. Her Father was [her father] William Lord Dacre, Baron of Ghisland [aged 45], a man, besides the most ancient Nobility of his family, of such power and estate, as that he possessed seauen Baronyes (which scarce any Noble man of England ever had) and was of eminent authority in the North parts of England, and both himselfe and his ancestors of very famous esteeme in England, in regard of their notable prowesse in matters of warre, for the safety and honour of their Country.
On 20th January 1538 Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague was born to [her father] William Dacre 3rd Baron Dacre Gilsland 7th Baron Greystoke [aged 45] and [her mother] Elizabeth Talbot Baroness Dacre of Gilsland [aged 31] at Naworth Castle [Map]. Coefficient of inbreeding 1.57%.
After 1547 [her brother-in-law] Henry Clifford 2nd Earl of Cumberland [aged 30] and [her sister] Anne Dacre Countess Cumberland [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Countess of Cumberland. He the son of Henry Clifford 1st Earl of Cumberland and Margaret Percy Baroness Clifford. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
On 6th May 1548 Anthony Browne [aged 48] died at Byfleet, Surrey. He was buried at Senlac Hill Hastings. [her future husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 19] inherited Cowdray House [Map].
In 1551 Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 12] served as a gentlewoman to Anne Sapcote Countess Bedford [aged 72].
After 6th May 1552 [her mother] Elizabeth Talbot Baroness Dacre of Gilsland [deceased] died.
Before 22nd July 1552 [her future husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 23] and Jane Radclyffe were married. She the daughter of Robert Radclyffe 1st Earl of Sussex and Margaret Stanley Countess Sussex. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.
Before 10th December 1553 Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 25] and Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 15] were married. They were third cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
On 28th May 1554 Gerald "Wizard Earl" Fitzgerald 11th Earl of Kildare [aged 29] and [her sister-in-law] Mabel Browne Countess Kildare [aged 18] were married at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. She by marriage Countess Kildare. He the son of Gerald Fitzgerald 9th Earl of Kildare and Elizabeth Grey Countess Kildare. They were third cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
On 25th July 1554 Prince Philip of Spain [aged 27] and Queen Mary [aged 38] were married by Bishop Stephen Gardiner [aged 71] at Winchester Cathedral [Map]. She the daughter of King Henry VIII of England and Ireland and Catherine of Aragon Queen Consort England. He the son of Charles V Holy Roman Emperor [aged 54] and Isabel Aviz Queen Consort Spain. They were first cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.
John Gage [aged 74] bore the queen's train.
Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 16] took part in the Bridal Procession.
On 2nd September 1554 [her husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 25] was created 1st Viscount Montagu. Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 16] by marriage Viscountess Montagu. In 1555 [her son] George Browne was born to [her husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 26] and Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 16]. He married Elizabeth Lawe.
Henry Machyn's Diary. 20th December 1556. [The xx day of December the Queen [aged 40] rode in her chariot through the park from] Santt James unto the galere, and so [took] her barge unto Westmynster, and landyd [at the palace,] and so in-to the abbay, and ther her grace hard [even song], and my lord cardenalle [aged 56] and my [her husband] lord Montyguw [aged 28], [and my] lord Darse of Essex [aged 59] dyd bere the sword a-for [her grace], and my lade Montyguw [aged 18] bare up the quen ['s train].
William of Worcester's Chronicle of England
William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 1st January 1562 the New Years Gift Giving was held. Those who gave gifts provide an interesting who's who of the Elizabethan Court soon after Elizabeth I's Coronation. Queen Elizabeth [aged 28] was present since a number are described as "With the Qene her Majestie."

Lady Margaret Strange married Henry Stanley Lord Strange [aged 30] on 07 Feb 1555. In 1561 he had not succeeded to Earldom of Derby and was known by the courtesy title Lord Strange. She is listed first since she was one of the few remaining direct descendants of Henry VII, being a great-granddaughter by his daughter Mary Tudor. Margaret Clifford was first in line to succeed in 1568 but died in 1596 before Elizabeth I.

On 18th November 1563 [her father] William Dacre 3rd Baron Dacre Gilsland 7th Baron Greystoke [aged 70] died. His son [her brother] Thomas [aged 36] succeeded 4th Baron Dacre Gilsland, 8th Baron Greystoke.
On 1st July 1566 [her brother] Thomas Dacre 4th Baron Dacre Gilsland 8th Baron Greystoke [aged 39] died. His son [her nephew] George [aged 5] succeeded 5th Baron Dacre Gilsland, 9th Baron Greystoke.
In 1572 [her step-son] Anthony Browne [aged 19] and Mary Dormer [aged 17] were married.
In or before 1573 [her son-in-law] Robert Dormer 1st Baron Dormer [aged 21] and [her daughter] Elizabeth Browne Baroness Dormer were married.
Before 6th October 1573 Henry Wriothesley 2nd Earl of Southampton [aged 28] and [her step-daughter] Mary Browne Countess Southampton [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Countess of Southampton. He the son of Thomas Wriothesley 1st Earl of Southampton and Jane Cheney Countess Southampton [aged 64].
In July 1581 [her sister] Anne Dacre Countess Cumberland [aged 60] died.
On 15th August 1591 Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland [aged 57] arrived at Cowdray House [Map] the home of [her husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 62] and Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 53]. She was welcomed by a breakfast for some 300 guests. [her son] George Browne [aged 36] was knighted. Henry Browne organised the hunting. Elizabeth stayed until the 21 Aug 1591.
On 29th June 1592 [her step-son] Anthony Browne [aged 39] died at Riverbank House Cowdray Midhurst. He was buried at Midhurst.
On 19th October 1592 [her husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 63] died. His grandson Anthony [aged 18] succeeded 2nd Viscount Montagu.
After 19th October 1592. St Mary's Church, Easebourne, Sussex [Map]. Monument to [her former husband] Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [deceased], Jane Radclyffe and Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 54]. The monument was originally in Midhurst but was subsequently moved. As there was less room, it was re-arranged, with Lord Montague kneeling behind and above the two recumbent effigies of his wives, instead of having a wife on either side, with obelisks at the corners.
Jane Radclyffe: she was born to Robert Radclyffe 1st Earl of Sussex and Margaret Stanley Countess Sussex. Before 22nd July 1552 Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu and she were married. She the daughter of Robert Radclyffe 1st Earl of Sussex and Margaret Stanley Countess Sussex. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.
On 8th April 1608 Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 70] died at Battle Abbey [Map]. She was buried at Midhurst; subsequently moved to St Mary's Church, Easebourne, Sussex [Map].
Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Life of Lady Magdalen Viscountess Montagu. And albeit those pangs were very violent and continuall from Thursday three of the clocke in the after noone, till almost midnight of the day following, which was the eight of Aprill [1608], when she [Magdalen Dacre Viscountess Montague [aged 70]] gave up her Ghost; yet did she persevere with the same admirable patience and tranquillity of mind. In so much that the Friday morning, being asked how she had passed the precedēt night, she answered: The best of all that ever I passed. For the most prudent woman perceyued death to draw on, and that night to open unto her a day which was neuer to haue end. Whiles her senses continued, she prayed with us, & in one hand she held a Crosse till her forces fayled; in the other a hallowed light, which she held so fast euen after her death, that without force it could not be wrested from her. Her last words which could be understood, were those of our Saviour: Into thy hands (O Lord) I commend my spirit; which without any resistaance or reluctation she peaceably yielded up, a litle before midnight: at which time, as the Scripture sayth, There was a clamour made, Behold the bridegrome commeth, go ye forth to meet him: she with the holy women, within the Octaues of our Lords Resurrection, arose out of this valley of teares, & her lampe being prepared, entred, as we hope, with the Bridegrome to the Mariage. Her bowels were buryed at Battell where she dyed, in the monument of her husbands Father, and her body honourably caryed to Midhurst, and there layd in the Sepulcher of her husband.
