Biography of Mauda Alethea Stanley 1832-1915

On 7th October 1826 [her father] Edward John Stanley 2nd Baron Stanley and 1st Baron Eddisbury (age 23) and [her mother] Henrietta Maria Dillon Baroness Stanley Alderley and Eddisbury (age 18) were married.

On 16th June 1869 [her father] Edward John Stanley 2nd Baron Stanley and 1st Baron Eddisbury (age 66) died. His son [her brother] Henry (age 41) succeeded 3rd Baron Stanley Alderley, 2nd Baron Eddisbury of Winnington in Cheshire, 9th Baronet Stanley of Alderley in Cheshire.

In 1880 Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 46) established the Girls Club Union which became London Youth.

In 1884 Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 50) became manager of the Metropolitan Asylums Board

In 1890 Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 56) wrote Clubs for Working Girls, the first text about young women's clubs, and took a lifelong interest in the welfare of working teenage girls.

In 1892 Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 58) became governor of the Borough Polytechnic.

Before 1895 Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 61) lived with her mother [her mother] Henrietta Maria Dillon Baroness Stanley Alderley and Eddisbury (age 87) until her death in 1895.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 16th February 1895 [her mother] Henrietta Maria Dillon Baroness Stanley Alderley and Eddisbury (age 87) died.

After 1915. Memorial to Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 81) at the Stanley Mausoleum, St Mary's Church [Map]. Possibly designed by Robert Stodart Lorimer (age 50).

Robert Stodart Lorimer: On 4th November 1864 he was born to James Lorimer and Hannah Stodart in Edinburgh. On 13th September 1929 he died.

On 14th July 1915 Mauda Alethea Stanley (age 82) died at Alderley Park, Cheshire [Map] of a heart condition. Her funeral was held on 16th July 1915. A memorial service was subsequently held at St John's Church to which Queen Mary (age 48) and Queen Alexandra (age 70) sent representatives. Queen Alexandra's wreath was inscribed with: "In memory of dear Miss Stanley and all her many good works. From her devoted Alexandra".
