Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Before 20th June 1635 Patrick Chaworth 3rd Viscount Chaworth was born to [his father] John Chaworth 2nd Viscount Chaworth (age 30) and [his mother] Elizabeth Noel Viscountess Chaworth (age 30).

On 20th June 1635 Patrick Chaworth 3rd Viscount Chaworth was baptised at Southwell, Nottinghamshire.

In 1638 [his mother] Elizabeth Noel Viscountess Chaworth (age 33) died.

On 3rd July 1639 [his grandfather] George Chaworth 1st Viscount Chaworth (age 85) died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at St Andrew's Church, Langar. His son [his father] John (age 34) succeeded 2nd Viscount Chaworth in County Armagh.

On 13th December 1643 [his father] John Chaworth 2nd Viscount Chaworth (age 38) and Anne Hickman Viscountess Chaworth were married at Gainsborough [Map]. She by marriage Viscountess Chaworth in County Armagh.

In June 1644 [his father] John Chaworth 2nd Viscount Chaworth (age 39) died. His son Patrick (age 8) succeeded 3rd Viscount Chaworth in County Armagh.

In or before 1655 Patrick Chaworth 3rd Viscount Chaworth (age 19) and Grace Manners Viscountess Chaworth were married. She by marriage Viscountess Chaworth in County Armagh. She the daughter of John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 50) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 40). They were third cousins.

She married 1682 Chambre Brabazon 5th Earl Meath, son of Edward Brabazon 2nd Earl Meath and Mary Chambré Countess Meath, and had issue.

In 1660 [his sister-in-law] Frances Manners Countess Exeter (age 29) died.

In 1660 [his brother-in-law] William Byron 3rd Baron Byron (age 24) and [his sister] Elizabeth Chaworth Baroness Byron (age 27) were married. She by marriage Baroness Byron of Rochdale in Lancashire.

In 1661 James Cecil 3rd Earl Salisbury (age 13) and [his sister-in-law] Margaret Manners Countess of Salisbury were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 56) and [his mother-in-law] Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 47). They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 17th September 1669 James Annesley 2nd Earl Anglesey (age 24) and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Manners Countess Anglesey (age 15) were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 65) and [his mother-in-law] Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 55). He the son of Arthur Annesley 1st Earl Annesley (age 55) and Elizabeth Altham Countess Anglesey (age 49).

On 10th November 1671 [his brother-in-law] John Manners 1st Duke Rutland (age 33) and Diana Bruce were married. She the daughter of Robert Bruce 2nd Earl Elgin 1st Earl Ailesbury (age 45) and Diana Grey Countess Elgin and Ailesbury (age 41). He the son of [his father-in-law] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 67) and [his mother-in-law] Frances Montagu Countess Rutland. They were third cousin once removed.

On 8th January 1673 [his brother-in-law] John Manners 1st Duke Rutland (age 34) and Catherine Noel Duchess Rutland (age 16) were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 68) and [his mother-in-law] Frances Montagu Countess Rutland. They were half first cousin twice removed.

In 1679 [his brother-in-law] John Manners 1st Duke Rutland (age 40) was created 1st Baron Manners of Haddon in Derbyshire.

On 29th September 1679 [his father-in-law] John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 75) died at Nether Haddon, Derbyshire [Map]. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bottesford, Leicestershire [Map]. His son [his brother-in-law] John (age 41) succeeded 9th Earl of Rutland. The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.
