De László had met the financier Sir Ernest Cassel and his daughter in Rome in 1900, while he was painting Pope Leo XIII and Cardinal Rampolla, and Cassel extended an invitation for them to continue their holiday at his home the Villa Cassel in Rieder Furka in the Swiss Alps. During their visit the artist painted study portraits of Sir Ernest and his sister Wilhelmina in gratitude, as well as the preparatory oil sketch for the present work.

Amalia Mary Maud Cassel: In 1880 she was born to Ernset Cassel and Annette Mary Maud Maxwell. Around 4th February 1901 Wilfred William Ashley 1st Baron Mount Temple and she were married. The Prince of Wales attended some eighteen days before he acceeded the throne. On 5th February 1911 Amalia Mary Maud Cassel died of tuberculosis. She was buried at Romsey Abbey [Map].

It was decorated with antique furniture, tapestries and objets d'art and the walls were hung with portraits from his own collection of which he was particularly proud, such as those of his mother and his wife Lucy

The private view was covered by many newspapers and the Daily News reported: "There were as many celebrities on the walls as there were in person. Lady Onslow, in a dress of ecru lace over black, the Hon. Mrs Edward Lascelles in a beige crepe de chine jumper suit … and Lady Stanhope in a beige coat and skirt and bright patterned scarf and red hat, were three beautiful women who came to see how they looked "hung." Also in attendance were Princess Louise of Sweden and her mother the Dowager Lady Milford Haven, to see the portrait of their sister and daughter-in-law Nadejda, daughter of Grand Duke Michael Michaelovitch of Russia (1861-1929). Before September 1940 James Richard Stanhope 7th Earl Stanhope 13th Earl Chesterfield and she were married. She by marriage Countess Stanhope. He the son of Arthur Philip Stanhope 6th Earl Stanhope and Evelyn Henrietta Pennefather Countess Stanhope. In September 1940 she died.

The Duchess of Northumberland (age 37) commissioned this double portrait of her children Diana and Richard at the end of June 1924, enquiring if de László could paint them almost immediately: "I wonder if you would be able to do a picture of Diana & Richard within the next fortnight or three weeks as they will be staying in town from next Wed 25th for a short time & I could arrange for it then if it would be quite convenient to you to paint them then. I thought something after the same idea as the lovely portrait you did of Betty two years ago, either together or separate."

De László's appointment book for 1928 indicates that he painted María Dolores Piñeiro de Wesley over two days, morning and afternoon, on 21 and 22 December. She told her children that de László talked continuously as he painted and that she greatly enjoyed their conversation, whereas her husband recalled that when he was shown the finished portrait in the artist's studio, he bluntly said: "I don't like it. László must have hated me for that".

María Dolores "Lala" Piñeiro: On 9th July 1892 she was born to Andrés Piñeiro and Dolores 'Lola' García Láinez at Tandil. In July 1908 María Dolores "Lala" Piñeiro celebrated her sixteenth birthday in Paris [Map]. On 17th June 1911 Alfredo Enrique Wellesley Wesley and she were married. On 19th March 1983 she died.

On 8th April 1899 Aldred Beresford Lumley 10th Earl Scarborough and Lucy Cecilia Dunn-Garnder Countess Scarborough were married at Christ Church. She by marriage Countess of Scarborough. He the son of Richard Lumley 9th Earl Scarborough and Adeliza Drummond Countess Scarborough. On 4th March 1945 Aldred Beresford Lumley 10th Earl Scarborough died. His nephew Roger succeeded 11th Earl of Scarborough, 12th Viscount Lumley, 11th Baron Lumley. Katherine Isobel McEwen Countess Scarborough by marriage Countess of Scarborough.

Flinders Petrie: On 3rd June 1853 he was born to William Petrie and Anne Flinders. Antiquaries Journal V1 1921 Section 1 Appendix. Professor Flinders Petrie argued that the difference of centres indicated laying out at different times; and transport from Wales would imply unified government or tribal warfare. The latter seemed more probable, and the stones were perhaps a form of war indemnity. He hoped that special measures would be taken to secure everything found in excavating the Aubrey holes.
