The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 23rd July 1392 [his father] William Beauchamp 1st Baron Abergavenny [aged 49] and [his mother] Joan Fitzalan Baroness Bergavenny were married. She by marriage Baroness Abergavenny. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Richard Fitzalan 9th Earl of Surrey 4th or 11th Earl of Arundel [aged 46] and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Bohun Countess Arundel and Surrey. He the son of Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick and Katherine Mortimer Countess Warwick. They were second cousin twice removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In or before 1396 Richard Beauchamp 1st Earl of Worcester was born to [his father] William Beauchamp 1st Baron Abergavenny [aged 52] and [his mother] Joan Fitzalan Baroness Bergavenny. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward I of England.

On 8th May 1411 [his father] William Beauchamp 1st Baron Abergavenny [aged 68] died at Meaux [Map]. He was buried at Tewkesbury Abbey [Map]. His son Richard [aged 15] succeeded 2nd Baron Abergavenny.

On 27th July 1411 Richard Beauchamp 1st Earl of Worcester [aged 15] and Isabel Despencer Countess Warwick and Worcester [aged 11] were married. She the daughter of Thomas Despencer 1st Earl Gloucester and Constance York Countess Gloucester [aged 37]. They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 7th October 1414 [his brother-in-law] Richard Despencer 4th Baron Burghesh [aged 17] died. His sister [his wife] Isabel [aged 14] succeeded 5th Baroness Burghesh.

On 16th September 1415 [his daughter] Elizabeth Beauchamp 3rd Baroness Bergavenny was born to Richard Beauchamp 1st Earl of Worcester [aged 19] and [his wife] Isabel Despencer Countess Warwick and Worcester [aged 15] at Hanley Castle, Worcestershire. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. She married 1436 her second cousin once removed Edward Neville 1st Baron Abergavenny, son of Ralph Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland and Joan Beaufort Countess of Westmoreland, and had issue.

In 1421 Richard Beauchamp 1st Earl of Worcester [aged 25] was created 1st Earl Worcester. [his wife] Isabel Despencer Countess Warwick and Worcester [aged 20] by marriage Countess Worcester.

The duke of Glouceter, sir Humfrey [aged 30], was that daye overloker, and stode before the quene bare hedyd. Sir Richarde Neuyll was that daye carver to the quene. The erlys brother of Suffolk cupberer, sir lohn Stewarde sewar. The lord Clyfford paterer, instede of ye erle of Warwik. The lord Wyllughby boteler, in stede of ye erle of Arudell. The lorde Gray Ruthyn [aged 59], or Ryffyn, naperer. The lord of Awdeley amner, in stede of the erle of Cambrydge. The erle of Worceter [aged 25] was that day erle marshal, in absence of the erle marshall, the whiche rode aboute the halle upon a great courser, wt a multytude of typped stauys aboute hym, to kepe the rome in the halle.

Note 1. her husband Edward 2nd Duke of York 1st Duke Albemarle had been killed six years before at the Battle of Agincourt so correctly Dowager Duchess of York.

Note 2. her husband Edmund Holland 4th Earl Kent had been killed thirteen years before at the Battle of Île de Bréhat so correctly Dowager Countess of Kent.

In 1422 Richard Beauchamp 1st Earl of Worcester [aged 26] died. Earl Worcester extinct. His daughter Elizabeth [aged 6] succeeded 3rd Baroness Abergavenny.

Before 1425 Richard Beauchamp 13th Earl Warwick [aged 42] and [his former wife] Isabel Despencer Countess Warwick and Worcester [aged 24] were married. She by marriage Countess Warwick. She the daughter of Thomas Despencer 1st Earl Gloucester and [his former mother-in-law] Constance York Countess Gloucester. He the son of [his uncle] Thomas Beauchamp 12th Earl Warwick and Margaret Ferrers Countess Warwick. They were third cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 27th December 1439 [his former wife] Isabel Despencer Countess Warwick and Worcester [aged 39] died. Her son Henry [aged 14] succeeded 6th Baron Burghesh.
