The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Around 1570 Richard Edgecumbe was born to Piers Edgecombe (age 34).

In 1585 Richard Edgecumbe (age 15) educated at Middle Temple.

In 1586 Richard Edgecumbe (age 16) was elected MP Liskeard.

In 1589 Richard Edgecumbe (age 19) was elected MP Totnes.

In 1593 Richard Edgecumbe (age 23) was elected MP Grampound.

In 1602 Richard Edgecumbe (age 32) and Anne Carey were married.

In 1603 Richard Edgecumbe (age 33) was knighted.

In 1608 Richard Edgecumbe (age 38) and Mary Cotelle were married.

On 4th January 1608 [his father] Piers Edgecombe (age 72) died.

Around 1609 [his son] Colonel Piers Edgecumbe was born to Richard Edgecumbe (age 39) and [his wife] Mary Cotelle.

In 1614 during the Addled Parliament Charles Thynne (age 46) was elected MP Lymington. John "Black Sir John" Egerton (age 63) was elected MP Lichfield. Mervyn Tuchet 2nd Earl Castlehaven (age 21) was elected MP Dorset. Richard Edgecumbe (age 44) was elected MP Bodmin.

Happy Parliament

On 30th December 1623 the fourth Parliament of James I (age 57) known as the Happy Parliament was summoned.

On 19th February 1624 the Happy Parliament held its first session.

Roland Egerton 1st Baronet (age 29) was elected MP Wootton Bassett.

Arthur Lake (age 25) was elected MP Minehead.

James Wriothesley (age 18) was elected MP Winchester.

Richard Edgecumbe (age 53) was elected MP Grampound.

In 1628 Richard Edgecumbe (age 58) was elected MP Bossiney.

In 1636 [his son] Colonel Piers Edgecumbe (age 27) and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Glanville were married at St Dunstan's in the West, Fleet Street [Map].

On 23rd March 1639 Richard Edgecumbe (age 69) died.
