The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Richard Gurney 1st Baronet 1578-1647

On or before 8th March 1578 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet was born. He was baptised on 08 Mar 1578.

On 24th August 1629 John Eyre (age 49) inherited Great Chalfield, Wiltshire [Map] from his father but sold it two years later to Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 51).

In 1633 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 54) was appointed Master of the Clothworkers Company.

On 26th August 1634 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 56) was elected Alderman for Bishopsgate ward.

In 1637 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 58) was elected Alderman for Dowgate ward.

In 1641 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 62) was elected Lord Mayor of London.

On 25th November 1641 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 63) was knighted.

On 14th December 1641 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 63) was created 1st Baronet Gurney of London.

On 6th October 1647 Richard Gurney 1st Baronet (age 69) died. Baronet Gurney of London extinct.
