Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall

Biography of Richard Lumley 1st Viscount Lumley 1589-1663

Paternal Family Tree: Lumley

Richard Lumley 1st and Frances Shelley were married.

On 7th April 1589 Richard Lumley 1st was born to [his father] Roger Lumley and [his mother] Anne Kurtwich. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward IV of England.

In 1596 William Sandys and [his future wife]  (age 6) were married.

On 22nd November 1596 William Sandes (age 21) and [his future wife] Elizabeth Cornwallis (age 6) were married. There was no issue from the marriage. They were half fifth cousins.

On 19th July 1619 Richard Lumley 1st (age 30) was knighted by King James I of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland (age 53) at Theobalds House, Hertfordshire.

After 1621 [his son-in-law] Christopher Conyers 2nd Baronet and [his daughter] Julia Lumley were married. They were fifth cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward IV of England.

On 12th July 1628 Richard Lumley 1st (age 39) was created 1st Viscount Lumley. [his future wife]  (age 38) by marriage Viscountess Lumley.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 11th May 1630 Richard Lumley 1st (age 41) and (age 40) were married. They were fifth cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward IV of England.

On 12th January 1635 [his sister-in-law] Anne Cornwallis Countess Argyll (age 45) died at Drury Lane.

In 1658 [his wife]  (age 68) died.

Before 12th March 1663 Richard Lumley 1st (age 73) died. His grandson [his grandson] Richard (age 13) succeeded 2nd Viscount Lumley.

[his father] Roger Lumley and [his mother] Anne Kurtwich were married.

[his daughter] Julia Lumley was born to Richard Lumley 1st and Frances Shelley. She married after 1621 her fifth cousin once removed Christopher Conyers 2nd Baronet, son of John Conyers 1st Baronet, and had issue.

[his son] John Lumley was born to Richard Lumley 1st and Frances Shelley. He married his sixth cousin Mary Compton and had issue.
