Biography of Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater 1681-1744

On 7th November 1664 [his father] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater (age 17) and Elizabeth Cranfield were married. She the daughter of James Cranfield 2nd Earl Middlesex and Anne Bourchier Countess Middlesex (age 33). He the son of [his grandfather] John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater (age 41) and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 2nd April 1673 [his father] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater (age 26) and [his mother] Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater (age 17) were married at St Dionis Backchurch. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton (age 43) and [his grandmother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester. He the son of [his grandfather] John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater (age 49) and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 11th August 1681 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater was born to John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater (age 34) and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater (age 25).

On 19th March 1701 [his father] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater (age 54) died. He was buried in the Bridgewater Chapel, St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden. His son Scroop (age 19) succeeded 4th Earl Bridgewater, 5th Viscount Brackley, 5th Baron Ellesmere.

John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater: On 9th November 1646 he was born to John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. On 9th February 1703 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 21) and Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater (age 15) were married. She by marriage Countess Bridgewater. She the daughter of John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough (age 52) and Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough (age 42). He the son of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater (age 47).

On 3rd February 1704 [his son] John Egerton was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 22) and [his wife] Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater (age 16).

In 1705 John Montagu 2nd Duke Montagu (age 15) and [his sister-in-law] Mary Churchill Duchess of Montagu (age 15) were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough (age 54) and [his mother-in-law] Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough (age 44). He the son of Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu (age 66) and Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Northumberland. They were third cousins.

On 9th March 1709 Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu (age 70) died. He was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His son John (age 19) succeeded 2nd Duke Montagu, 4th Baron Montagu of Boughton in Northamptonshire. [his sister-in-law] Mary Churchill Duchess of Montagu (age 19) by marriage Duchess Montagu.

On 15th September 1712 Sidney Godolphin 1st Earl Godolphin (age 67) died. His son Francis (age 34) succeeded 2nd Earl Godolphin, 2nd Viscount Rialton, 2nd Baron Godolphin of Rialton in Cornwall. [his sister-in-law] Henrietta Churchill 2nd Duchess of Marlborough (age 31) by marriage Countess Godolphin.

On 22nd March 1714 [his wife] Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater (age 27) died. She was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 29th March 1714.

On 23rd May 1716 [his mother] Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater (age 60) died. She was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 30th May 1716.

On 30th January 1719 [his son] John Egerton (age 14) died of smallpox at Eton College [Map]. He was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 5th February 1719.

On 18th June 1720 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 38) was created 1st Duke Bridgewater.

On 4th August 1722 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 40) and Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 15) were married. She by marriage Duchess Bridgewater. The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford (age 40). He the son of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 30th April 1723 [his daughter] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 41) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 16).

After January 1724 William Capell 3rd Earl Essex (age 26) and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Russell Countess Essex (age 13) were married. She by marriage Countess Essex. She the daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford (age 42). He the son of Algernon Capell 2nd Earl Essex and Mary Bentinck Countess Essex (age 44). They were fourth cousins.

On 22nd April 1725 [his son-in-law] Wriothesley Russell 3rd Duke Bedford (age 16) and [his daughter] Anne Egerton Duchess Bedford were married. She by marriage Duchess Bedford. She was the step-daughter of his sister [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 18). She the daughter of Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 43) and [his former wife] Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater. He the son of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford. They were sixth cousins.

On 27th July 1725 [his son] Charles Egerton was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 43) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 18).

On 29th April 1727 [his son] John Egerton 2nd Duke Bridgewater was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 45) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 20).

On 15th January 1728 [his son] William Egerton was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 46) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 21).

On 10th February 1729 [his son] William Egerton (age 1) died.

On 3rd March 1731 [his daughter] Diana Egerton Baroness Baltimore was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 49) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 24).

On 2nd May 1731 [his son] Charles Egerton (age 5) died.

On 11th October 1731 [his brother-in-law] John Russell 4th Duke Bedford (age 21) and Diana Spencer Duchess Bedford (age 21) were married. She the daughter of Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland and [his former sister-in-law] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland. He the son of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford. They were third cousins.

On 23rd October 1732 [his son-in-law] Wriothesley Russell 3rd Duke Bedford (age 24) died at A Coruña. He was buried at Bedford Chapel, St Michael's Church, Chenies. His brother [his brother-in-law] John (age 22) succeeded 4th Duke Bedford, 4th Marquess Tavistock, 8th Earl Bedford, 8th Baron Russell of Cheneys, 6th Baron Russell of Thornhaugh, 4th Baron Howland of Streatham. On 23rd June 1733 [his son-in-law] William Villiers 3rd Earl Jersey (age 26) and [his daughter] Anne Egerton Duchess Bedford were married. She by marriage Countess Jersey. She the daughter of Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 51) and [his former wife] Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater. He the son of William Villiers 2nd Earl Jersey. They were fourth cousin once removed.

In April 1737 [his brother-in-law] John Russell 4th Duke Bedford (age 26) and Gertrude Leveson-Gower Duchess Bedford were married. She by marriage Duchess Bedford. She the daughter of John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 42) and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower. On 11th January 1744 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 62) died. His son [his son] John (age 16) succeeded 2nd Duke Bridgewater, 5th Earl Bridgewater, 6th Viscount Brackley, 6th Baron Ellesmere.

On 14th December 1745 Lieutenant-General Richard Lyttelton (age 25) and [his former wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 38) were married. She the daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his former mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford.

In 1777 [his former wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 70) died.
