Biography of Thomas Carew Trollope 3rd Baron Kesteven 1891-1915

Paternal Family Tree: Trollope

On 22nd October 1885 [his father] Major Robert Cranmer Trollope (age 32) and [his mother] Ethel Mary Carew were married.

On 1st May 1891 Thomas Carew Trollope 3rd was born to [his father] Major Robert Cranmer Trollope (age 38) and [his mother] Ethel Mary Carew.

On 25th November 1908 [his father] Major Robert Cranmer Trollope (age 56) died.

On 23rd July 1915 [his uncle] Lieutenant-Colonel John Henry Trollope 2nd Baron Kesteven (age 63) died without issue. His nephew Thomas (age 24) succeeded 3rd Baron Kesteven, 9th Baronet Trollope of Casewick in Lincolnshire.

On 5th November 1915 Thomas Carew Trollope 3rd (age 24) died from wounds received unmarried. Baron Kesteven extinct. His first cousin once removed William (age 57) succeeded 10th Baronet Trollope of Casewick in Lincolnshire.

While journeying out to the Balkans, the ship Thomas was travelling on, the SS Mercian, was shelled by U-Boat SM U-38. After more than an hour being bombarded, the Mercian escaped. However, in that time, on 5th November 1915, 78 men were wounded, 23 were dead, 22 troops and eight crew members were missing. She managed to dock at Oran, Algeria, and those killed were either buried at sea or in the city's cemetery.

Official intimation has been received of the death of Capt. Lord Kesteven (deceased), of the Lincolnshire Yeomanry, who sailed for the Balkans last week. Sir Thomas Carew Trollope… third Baron Kesteven, who was born in May 1891, was the only son of the late Hon. [his father] Robert Cranmer Trollope and the Hon. Mrs Trollope, of Crowcombe Court, Taunton, and was educated at Eton. He succeeded to the barony on the death of his uncle, the [his uncle] second Baron, in July last. He joined the Lincolnshire Yeomanry about six years ago, when his uncle was Colonel of the regiment, and was gazetted Captain in October 1914. He had seen service in France during the present war, being attached to Jacob's Horse, Indian Cavalry, until he succeeded to the title. Lord Kesteven was unmarried, and the title becomes extinct, but the baronetcy goes to Mr William Henry Trollope (age 57).

A memorial service was held in the Church of the Holy Ghost, Crowcombe [Map], on Monday 15th November 1915, the villagers commemorating the untimely passing of their favourite "Mr Tom Trollope (deceased)".

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

The remains of Thomas Carew Trollope 3rd were returned to England and buried at the Church of the Holy Ghost in Crowcombe, Somerset, on the 29th June 1916.
