Biography of Thomas Heneage 1532-1595

Paternal Family Tree: Heneage

Around 1511 [his father] Robert Heneage (age 11) and [his step-mother] Anne Capell (age 9) were married. This marriage may have never taken place, or have been annulled, since she lived to 1587 whereas he married twice later around 1530 and 1548.

Around 1530 [his father] Robert Heneage (age 30) and [his mother] Lucy Buckton were married.

In 1532 Thomas Heneage was born to Robert Heneage (age 32) and Lucy Buckton at Copt Hall, Essex.

Around 1544 Thomas Heneage (age 12) educated at Queen's College, Cambridge University [Map].

Around 1548 [his father] Robert Heneage (age 48) and Margaret Manners were married.

In 1553 Thomas Heneage (age 21) was appointed MP Stamford.

In 1554 Thomas Heneage (age 22) and Anne Poyntz (age 20) were married.

On 9th July 1556 [his daughter] Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea was born to Thomas Heneage (age 24) and [his wife] Anne Poyntz (age 22).

On 27th July 1556 [his father] Robert Heneage (age 56) died.

In 1559 Thomas Heneage (age 27) was appointed MP Arundel.

In 1565 Thomas Heneage (age 33) was appointed Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 31).

On 14th November 1572 [his son-in-law] Moyle Finch 1st Baronet (age 22) and [his daughter] Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea (age 16) were married.

Before 6th October 1573 Henry Wriothesley 2nd Earl of Southampton (age 28) and [his future wife] Mary Browne Countess Southampton (age 21) were married. She by marriage Countess of Southampton. He the son of Thomas Wriothesley 1st Earl of Southampton and Jane Cheney Countess Southampton (age 64).

In 1577 Thomas Heneage (age 45) was knighted.

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1586 Thomas Heneage (age 54) sent by Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 52) to the Low Countries.

In 1587 Thomas Heneage (age 55) was appointed Privy Council.

In 1587 Thomas Heneage (age 55) was appointed Vice-Chamberlain of the Household.

On 1st March 1587 John Puckering (age 43) was asked by Peter Wentworth (age 58) to answer some questions regarding the liberties of the House. Puckering refused, but showed one of the questions to Thomas Heneage (age 55). Wentworth, and four other members of parliament who seconded his motion were imprisoned in the Tower of London [Map].

In 1590 Thomas Heneage (age 58) was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

On 30th November 1592 [his wife] Anne Poyntz (age 58) died.

On 2nd May 1594 Thomas Heneage (age 62) and Mary Browne Countess Southampton (age 41) were married. Her second husband. The difference in their ages was 20 years.

On 17th October 1595 Thomas Heneage (age 63) died. He was buried at St Paul's Cathedral [Map].

Between 5th November 1598 and 31st January 1599 William Hervey 1st Baron Hervey (age 33) and [his former wife] Mary Browne Countess Southampton (age 46) were married. Her third husband.

Before 5th February 1607 [his former wife] Mary Browne Countess Southampton (age 54) died.
