Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Biography of Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet 1540-1624

In or before 1540 [his father] Nicholas Pelham (age 22) and [his mother] Anne Sackville (age 18) were married. They were half third cousins.

Around 1540 Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet was born to [his father] Nicholas Pelham (age 23) and [his mother] Anne Sackville (age 19).

On 20th June 1541 Thomas Fiennes 9th Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 26) was tried for the murder of John Busbrig, servant of [his father] Nicholas Pelham (age 24) on whose land they were poaching on 30 Apr 1541. Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 68) was appointed Lord High Steward for the trial.

From 1557 Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet (age 17) was educated at Lewes Grammar School Lewes.

On 15th September 1560 [his father] Nicholas Pelham (age 43) died.

From 1561 Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet (age 21) was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge University [Map].

In 1584 Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet (age 44) was elected MP Lewes.

In 1586 Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet (age 46) was elected MP Sussex.

Before 21st June 1590 [his daughter] Judith Pelham Countess Dover was born to Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet (age 50) and [his future wife] Mary Walsingham Baroness Pelham Laughton (age 26). She married before 1608 her third cousin once removed Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover, son of John Carey 3rd Baron Hunsdon and Mary Hyde Baroness Hunsdon, and had issue.

On 10th May 1595 [his mother] Anne Sackville (age 74) died.

Around 22nd September 1597 [his son] Thomas Pelham 2nd Baronet was born to Thomas Pelham 1st Baronet (age 57) and [his wife] Mary Walsingham Baroness Pelham Laughton (age 33) at Halland. He married (1) 1623 Mary Wilbraham Lady Pelham (2) 7th December 1637 Judith Honywood Lady Pelham (3) 3rd June 1640 his fourth cousin once removed Margaret Vane Lady Pelham and had issue.

Before 1608 [his son-in-law] Henry Carey 1st Earl Dover (age 27) and [his daughter] Judith Pelham Countess Dover (age 17) were married. They were third cousin once removed.

On 22nd May 1611 the first Baronets were created by James I (age 44)

Walter Aston 1st Baronet (age 27) was created 1st Baronet Aston of Tixall.

Nicolas Bacon (age 71) was created 1st Baronet Bacon of Redgrave in Suffolk. The Premier Baronet being the first creation.

Henry Belasyse 1st Baronet (age 55) was created 1st Baronet Belasyse of Newborough.

George Booth (age 54) was created 1st Baronet Booth of Dunham Massey. Katherine Anderson Lady Dunham Massey (age 43) by marriage Lady Booth of Dunham Massey.

Edward Carr (age 68) was created 1st Baronet Carr of Sleaford in Lincolnshire. Anne Dyer Lady Carr by marriage Lady Carr of Sleaford in Lincolnshire.

Gervase Clifton 1st Baronet (age 23) was created 1st Baronet Clifton of Clifton in Nottinghamshire.
