The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Paternal Family Tree: Stapleton of the Leeward Islands
On 27th November 1765 [his father] Thomas Stapleton 5th Baronet (age 38) and [his mother] Mary Fane Lady Stapleton (age 21) were married. She by marriage Lady Stapleton of Leeward Islands. They were fourth cousins.
On 10th November 1766 Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer was born to Thomas Stapleton 5th Baronet (age 39) and Mary Fane Lady Stapleton (age 22).
In 1781 [his father] Thomas Stapleton 5th Baronet (age 54) died. His son Thomas (age 14) succeeded 6th Baronet Stapleton of Leeward Islands.
On 11th December 1781 Francis Dashwood 11th Baron Despencer (age 73) died without legitimate issue. Baron Despencer abeyant between his sister, Rachel Dashwood (age 75), and the descendants of his aunt, Catherine Fane. When his sister died without issue in 1788 the barony was called out of abeyance in favour of Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 15), the only surviving descendant of his aunt. His half brother John (age 65) succeeded 3rd Baronet Dashwood of West Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.
In 1788 Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 21) abeyance terminated 12th Baron Despencer.
On 29th July 1791 Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 24) and Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 33) were married. She by marriage Baroness Despencer.
On 24th April 1792 [his son] Thomas Stapleton was born to Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 25) and [his wife] Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 34).
On 21st March 1801 [his son] Reverend Miles Stapleton was born to Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 34) and [his wife] Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 43).
In or before 1804 [his daughter] Emily Stapleton was born to Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 37) and [his wife] Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 45).
On 15th April 1805 [his daughter] Anna Frances Esther Stapleton was born to Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 38) and [his wife] Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 47).
On 6th August 1807 [his son] Francis Jarvis Stapleton 7th Baronet was born to Thomas Stapleton 12th Baron Despencer (age 40) and [his wife] Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 49).
On 9th January 1813 [his son-in-law] Robert Jocelyn 3rd Earl Roden (age 24) and [his daughter] Maria Frances Catherine Stapleton Countess Roden were married. He the son of Robert Jocelyn 2nd Earl Roden (age 56).
On 2nd February 1816 [his son] Thomas Stapleton (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Frances Woodley (age 56) were married. The difference in their ages was 32 years; she, unusually, being older than him.
In On 25th November 1817 or 25th December 1817 [his son-in-law] Hercules Robert Pakenham (age 36) and [his daughter] Emily Stapleton (age 13) were married. The difference in their ages was 22 years.
On 29th December 1820 [his son] Reverend Miles Stapleton (age 19) and [his daughter-in-law] Anne Byam Kerby were married.
On 5th May 1825 [his son-in-law] Charles Brodrick (age 33) and [his daughter] Emma Stapleton were married.
On 3rd December 1828 [his son-in-law] Henry Maxwell 7th Baron Farnham (age 29) and [his daughter] Anna Frances Esther Stapleton (age 23) were married.
On 1st June 1829 [his son] Thomas Stapleton (age 37) died.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1848 [his former wife] Elizabeth Eliot Baroness Despencer (age 90) died.
