In 1525 Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth was born to [his father] Thomas Wentworth 1st Baron Wentworth (age 24) and [his mother] Margaret Fortescue Baroness Wentworth (age 23).

On 17th October 1528 [his grandfather] Richard Wentworth 5th Baron Despencer (age 48) died. His son [his father] Thomas (age 27) de jure 6th Baron Despencer.

Around 1535 Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 10) educated at St John's College, Cambridge University [Map].

In or before 1538 [his father] Thomas Wentworth 1st Baron Wentworth (age 36) and [his mother] Margaret Fortescue Baroness Wentworth (age 35) were married. They were fourth cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 9th February 1546 Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 21) and Mary Wentworth Baroness Wentworth (age 21) were married. They were third cousin once removed.

Battle of Pinkie Cleugh

On 10th September 1547 an English army commanded by Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset (age 47) defeated a Scottish army commanded by James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran (age 31) and Archibald Douglas 6th Earl Angus (age 58) at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh at Musselburgh.

The English army included John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland (age 43), Francis Talbot 5th Earl of Shrewsbury (age 47), Miles Partridge and Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 22). John Thynne (age 32) and Edmund Brydges 2nd Baron Chandos (age 25) were knighted.

William Cecil 1st Baron Burghley (age 26) accompanied Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset.

Edward Shelley of Worminghurst Park (age 44) was killed.

John Forbes 6th Lord Forbes (age 82), Christopher Coningsby (age 31) and Edward Clere were killed.

John Thynne was knighted after the battle.

George Sandes (age 29) was killed.

The Scottish army included John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland (age 22) who commanded the Rearguard and Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis (age 32). John Stewart, Robert Douglas (age 41), John Livingston, Thomas Hamilton of Priestfield and Hugh Montgomerie were killed. John Hay 4th Lord Hay was captured but soon released.

Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming (age 53) was killed. His son James (age 13) succeeded 4th Lord Fleming. Barbara Hamilton Lady Fleming by marriage Lord Fleming.

Robert Graham Master of Montrose and James Gordon of Lochinvar were killed.

In 1550 [his father] Thomas Wentworth 1st Baron Wentworth (age 49) was appointed Lord Chamberlain.

On 3rd March 1551 [his father] Thomas Wentworth 1st Baron Wentworth (age 50) died. He was buried at Chapel of St John the Baptist, Westminster Abbey [Map]. His son Thomas (age 26) succeeded 2nd Baron Wentworth. His son Thomas de jure 7th Baron Despencer. [his wife] Mary Wentworth Baroness Wentworth (age 26) by marriage Baroness Wentworth.

On 12th May 1551 [his mother] Margaret Fortescue Baroness Wentworth (age 49) died.

Around 1554 [his wife] Mary Wentworth Baroness Wentworth (age 29) died.

Around 1555 [his son] William Wentworth was born to Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 30) and [his future wife] Anne Wentworth Baroness Wentworth. He married 26th February 1582 Elizabeth Cecil, daughter of William Cecil 1st Baron Burghley and Mildred Cooke Baroness Burghley.

In 1556 Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 31) and Anne Wentworth Baroness Wentworth were married. She by marriage Baroness Wentworth. They were third cousin once removed.

Surrender of Calais

On 7th January 1558 at 6am Thomas Wentworth (age 33), Governor of Calais, surrendered Calais [Map] after a week long siege to François de Lorraine-Guise, 2nd Duke of Guise (age 38); it had been in English hands since 1347. Calais was the last English owned territory in France. The loss was a huge blow for Queen Mary I (age 41) and it is said that upon hearing the news she stated "When I am dead and opened, you shall find 'Philip' and 'Calais' lying in my heart" although the source for this is unknown.

Edward Grimston (age 50) was captured and imprisoned at the Bastille [Map].

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 2nd September 1574 [his wife] Anne Wentworth Baroness Wentworth died.

On 26th February 1582 [his son] William Wentworth (age 27) and [his daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Cecil (age 17) were married.

On 7th November 1582 [his son] William Wentworth (age 27) died.

On 13th January 1584 Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth (age 59) died. His son Henry (age 25) succeeded 3rd Baron Wentworth. His son Henry de jure 8th Baron Despencer.

Henry Machyn's Diary. After 20th April 1599. The (blank) day of Aprell was browth from the Towre [Map] unto Westmynster Hall [Map] to be reynyd, my lord Wentworth, last depute of Calles, for the lossyng of Calles; and ther wher serten of ys a-cussars; but he quytt hym-seylff, thanke be God, and clen delevered, and whent in-to Wytyngtun colege, and ther he lys.

[his daughter] Elizabeth Wentworth was born to Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth and Anne Wentworth Baroness Wentworth. She married in or before 1606 William Hynde.
