Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Biography of William Bromley 1699-1737

In or before 1685 [his uncle] William Bromley (age 21) and Catherine Cloberry were married.

On 21st November 1689 [his uncle] William Bromley (age 26) and Trever Fortrey were married. There was no issue from the marriage.

Before 1692 [his uncle] William Bromley (age 28) and Cecilia Swan were married.

On or after 12th January 1698, the date of the licence, [his uncle] William Bromley (age 34) and [his mother] Elizabeth Stawell were married.

Around 1699 William Bromley was born to [his uncle] William Bromley (age 35) and [his mother] Elizabeth Stawell.

On 20th March 1711 [his half-brother] Cloberley Bromley (age 25) died of smallpox. The House of Commons, on behalf of his father, the Speaker, [his uncle] William Bromley (age 47) adjourbed until the 26th of March.

On 7th July 1724 William Bromley (age 25) and Lucy Throckmorton were married.

On 15th March 1725 William Bromley (age 26) was elected MP Fowey at a by-election.

Around 1726 [his son] William Throckmorton Bromley was born to William Bromley (age 27) and [his wife] Lucy Throckmorton. He married May 1756 Bridget Davenport and had issue.

In 1727 William Bromley (age 28) was elected MP Warwick unopposed. He was re-elected in 1734, but was unseated on petition

On 13th February 1732 [his uncle] William Bromley (age 68) died.

On 2nd February 1737 William Bromley (age 38) was elected MP Oxford University, a seat his father had represented for thirty years. He died suddenly five weeks later.

On 12th March 1737 William Bromley (age 38) died.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.
