The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Paternal Family Tree: Paulett

On 9th December 1811 [his father] George Paulett (age 25) and [his mother] Catherine Sophia Dallas (age 22) were married. He the son of [his grandfather] John Paulett 4th Earl Paulett (age 55).

On 22nd September 1827 William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett was born to George Paulett (age 41) and Catherine Sophia Dallas (age 38).

On 11th April 1831 [his mother] Catherine Sophia Dallas (age 41) died.

On 23rd June 1849 William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 21) and Elizabeth Lavinia Newman Countess Poulett were married.

On 15th December 1849 [his son] William Turnour Thomas Poulett was born to William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 22) and [his wife] Elizabeth Lavinia Newman Countess Poulett. Given that he was born six months after his parents were married his paternity was subject to some doubt. His father William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett suspected Captain William Turnor Granville was the boys father and barred him from successoin to the Earl Paulett title.

In 1854 [his father] George Paulett (age 68) died.

In 1864 [his uncle] John Paulett 5th Earl Paulett (age 80) died. His nephew William (age 36) succeeded 6th Earl Poulett, 9th Baron Poulett. [his wife] Elizabeth Lavinia Newman Countess Poulett by marriage Countess Poulett.

On 9th August 1871 [his wife] Elizabeth Lavinia Newman Countess Poulett died. Six weeks later he married his second wife [his future wife] Emma Sophia Johnson Countess Poulett.

On 20th September 1871 William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 43) and Emma Sophia Johnson Countess Poulett were married six weeks after the death of his first wife Elizabeth Lavinia Newman Countess Poulett. She by marriage Countess Poulett.

In 1876 [his wife] Emma Sophia Johnson Countess Poulett died.

On 1st March 1879 William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 51) and Rosa Melville Countess Poulett were married. She by marriage Countess Poulett.

In 1880 [his daughter] Violet Nita Poulett was born to William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 52) and [his wife] Rosa Melville Countess Poulett.

On 11th September 1883 [his son] William John Lydston Poulett 7th Earl Poulett was born to William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 55) and [his wife] Rosa Melville Countess Poulett.

On 22nd January 1899 William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett (age 71) died. His son [his son] William (age 15) succeeded 7th Earl Poulett, 10th Baron Poulett.

The sixth earl's eldest son [his son] William Turnour Thomas Poulett (age 53) claimed the title. On 27th July 1903 the House of Lords determined the dispute in favour of William John Lydston Poulett 7th Earl Poulett somewhat contrary to the principle that the child of a woman born in wedlock was the child of her husband.

Report made from the Committee of Privileges:

That the Petitioner, William Turnour Thomas Poulett, claiming to be Viscount Hinton of Hinton St. George and Earl Poulett, both in the Peerage of England, hath not made out his claim to the dignities, titles, and honours of Viscount Hinton of Hinton St. George and Earl Poulett.

That the Petitioner, [his wife] Rosa Countess Poulett, formerly the wife and now the widow of William Henry, sixth Earl Poulett, as a testamentary guardian of her infant son William John Lydston, claiming to be Viscount Hinton of Hinton St. George, in the county of Somerset, and seventh Earl Poulett, both in the Peerage of England, hath made out her claim that the said William John Lydston Poulett should be declared to be by right entitled to the dignities, titles, and honours of Viscount Hinton of Hinton St. George and Earl Poulett.

Read, and agreed to; and resolved and adjudged accordingly; and Resolution and Judgment to be laid before His Majesty by the Lords with White Staves.

On 18th May 1901 Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina Stanhope Duchess of Cleveland (age 81) died. In her will she left £5000 to [his grandson] William Henry George Poulett (age 31), son of the dis-inherited eldest son of William Henry Paulett 6th Earl Paulett.
