Biography of William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet 1807-1881

On 19 Nov 1804 [his father] General William Payne-Gallwey 1st Baronet (age 45) and [his mother] Harriett Quin Lady Payne-Galway were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Valentine Richard Wyndham-Quin 1st Earl Dunraven and Mount-Earl (age 52) and [his grandmother] Frances Muriel Fox-Strangways Baroness Adare.

On 10 Jul 1807 William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet was born to General William Payne-Gallwey 1st Baronet (age 48) and Harriett Quin Lady Payne-Galway.

In 1831 [his father] General William Payne-Gallwey 1st Baronet (age 72) died. His son William (age 23) succeeded 2nd Baronet Payne of Hampton Hill.

On 13 Dec 1845 [his mother] Harriett Quin Lady Payne-Galway died.

On 10 Nov 1847 William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet (age 40) and Emily Anne Frankland-Russell Lady Frankland (age 25) were married. She by marriage Lady Payne of Hampton Hill.

On 19 Aug 1848 [his son] Ralph Frankland-Payne-Gallwey 3rd Baronet was born to William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet (age 41) and [his wife] Emily Anne Frankland-Russell Lady Frankland (age 26).

On 31 Jan 1850 [his son] Captain Edwin Payne-Gallwey was born to William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet (age 42) and [his wife] Emily Anne Frankland-Russell Lady Frankland (age 28).

In Mar 1851 William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet (age 43) was elected MP Thirsk unopposed at a by-election. He was re-elected without a contest in the next four general elections, and in contested elections in 1868 and 1874. He held the seat until he stood down at the 1880 general election.

Before 25 Mar 1881 [his son] Ralph Frankland-Payne-Gallwey 3rd Baronet (age 32) and [his daughter-in-law] Edith Alice Usborne Lady Payne-Gallwey (age 26) were married. She by marriage Lady Payne of Hampton Hill.

On 02 Nov 1881 [his son] Lionel Philip Payne-Gallwey (age 30) and [his daughter-in-law] Caroline Lucille Lynch were married.

On 19 Dec 1881 William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet (age 74) died as a result of severe internal injuries sustained after falling upon a turnip while out shooting in the parish of Bagby; see Northern Echo. His son [his son] Ralph (age 33) succeeded 3rd Baronet Payne-Gallwey of Hampton Hill.

Yesterday morning, after a short illness, Sir William Gallwey breathed his last at his residence, Thirkleby Park, near Thirsk. Sir William, who was a Conservative in politics, represented the borough of Thirsk in Parliament for twenty-eight years, and only resigned his seat when failing health compelled him to take the step at the last General Election, when the borough returned another Conservative in Colonel the Hon. L.P. Dawnay. Sir William during the last few years of his life conferred a lasting boon on the poor of Thirsk and Sowerby by the erection of some scores of cottage-houses, which were let at low rents. The deceased Baronet, who is seventy-three years of age, was born in 1808. The baronetage was created in 1812, and Sir William succeeded to it in 1831, and in 1847 he married Emily Anne, third daughter of Sir Robert Frankland Russell, of Chequers Court, Tring, and Thirkleby Park, Thirsk. He was a deputy-lieutenant for the North Riding of Yorkshire, and a major in the army, and leaves behind him a family, his heir being his son, Ralph William, born in 1848, who was educated at Eton. Lady Gallwey survives Sir William. Sir William, so late as Thursday, was out shooting in the parish of Bagby, and in crossing a turnip field fell with his body on to a turnip, sustaining severe internal injuries. All that medical aid could do was done, but with Sir William's failing health he gradually sank, and died, as stated above, about ten o'clock yesterday morning.

On 02 Oct 1882, following the death of her husband William Payne-Gallwey 2nd Baronet, [his former wife] Emily Anne Frankland-Russell Lady Frankland (age 60) re-assumed the surname Frankland by Royal License.

On 13 Sep 1913 [his former wife] Emily Anne Frankland-Russell Lady Frankland (age 91) died.
