771. St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map], in County Durham, dates to around AD 771 and retains Saxon windows and stonework. Historical highlights include a 14th-century screen, late-medieval choir stalls, and tombs of the powerful Neville family of nearby Raby Castle, County Durham [Map].
In the late 13th century a two-storey vestry was added, with the upper chamber serving as a hermit's residence. The earliest recorded hermit in Staindrop was John de Cameva in 1336.
In 1408 Ralph, 1st Earl of Westmoreland, was granted a license to establish a college of priests at Staindrop. The college is thought to have been located where the mausoleum now stands in the churchyard. Ralph also installed the choir stalls with their beautifully carved backs and misericords.
On 15th May 1254 Isabel Neville of Raby (age 78) died. She has an effigy at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map] at the side of which is also an effigy of a child.
Isabel Neville of Raby: Around 1176 she was born. In or before 1197 Robert Fitzmaldred and she were married. The difference in their ages was 26 years.
In 1329 Euphemia Clavering Baroness Neville Raby (age 62) died at Warkworth, Northumberland [Map]. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map].
Euphemia Clavering Baroness Neville Raby: Around 1267 she was born to Robert Fitzroger 5th Baron Warkworth and Margaret Zouche Baroness Warkworth. Before 1283 Ralph Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby and she were married. They were sixth cousins.
In 1343 Margery Thweng died. She has an effigy at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map]; it isn't certain whether she was buried there.
Margery Thweng: she was born to John de Thwenge and Joan de Mauley. After 1329 Ralph Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby and she were married.
On 21st October 1425 Ralph Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland (age 61) died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map]. His grandson Ralph (age 19) succeeded 2nd Earl of Westmoreland. Elizabeth Percy Countess of Westmoreland (age 30) by marriage Countess of Westmoreland.

Elizabeth Percy Countess of Westmoreland: Around 1395 she was born to Henry "Hotspur" Percy and Elizabeth Mortimer Baroness Camoys at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland [Map]. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Around 1404 John Clifford 7th Baron Clifford and she were married. She by marriage Baroness de Clifford. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. In 1426 Ralph Neville 2nd Earl of Westmoreland and she were married. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. On 26th October 1436 Elizabeth Percy Countess of Westmoreland died.
Effigy of Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmoreland and his Wives. The Earl of Westmorland lived until the reign of Henry the Sixth (age 8), and was buried at Staindrop [Map], where he had founded and amply endowed a collegiate church. In the chancel of this edifice was erected an altar-tomb, bearing his effigy and those of his two wives, but which has since been removed, with reckless ignorance and barbarous feeling, to an obscure corner in the south-west quarter. His first wife, whose figure reposes on the left hand of that of the Earl himself, was Margaret, eldest daughter of Hugh Earl of Stafford, by Philippa (age 96), daughter of Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. Joan de Beaufort (age 51), his second wife, was the only daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, by his concubine Catherine Swinford, whom he afterwards espoused. Joan was the widow of Robert Ferrers. She died A. D. 1340, and, although she is commemorated by an effigy at Staindrop (the monument most probably being prepared during the life-time of herself and her husband), she was buried in Lincoln cathedral [Map], near her mother, under an altar-tomb, with the following epitaph:

On 24th April 1549 Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop succeeded 5th Earl of Westmoreland. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. After 27th June 1549 Anne Manners Countess of Westmoreland died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map].
Jane Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland: Around 1518 she was born to Roger Cholmley and Catherine Constable. After June 1549 Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland and she were married. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. He would later marry her older sister Margaret Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland; an example of Married to Two Siblings. He the son of Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland and Katherine Stafford Countess of Westmoreland. They were half fifth cousins. In 1558 Jane Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland died. In or after 1558 Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland and Margaret Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland were married. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. She the older sister of his first wife Jane Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland; an example of Married to Two Siblings. Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington: In 1766 she was born to Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton and Katherine Lowther Duchess of Bolton. On 17th September 1787 William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland and she were married at her father's seat Hackwood Park, Hampshire. She the daughter of Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton and Katherine Lowther Duchess of Bolton. He the son of Henry Vane 2nd Earl Darlington and Margaret Lowther Countess Darlington. They were first cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. On 17th June 1807 Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington died at Cleveland House.
On 5th August 1793 John Lee (age 61) died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map] where he has a monument sculpted by Joseph Nollekens (age 55).
On 10th September 1800 Margaret Lowther Countess Darlington (age 72) died. She has a monument sculpted by Richard Cooke at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map] commissioned by her son William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 34).

He the son of Henry Vane 1st Earl Darlington and Grace Fitzroy Countess Darlington. On 6th March 1758 Henry Vane 1st Earl Darlington died. His son Henry succeeded 2nd Earl Darlington, 2nd Viscount Barnard, 4th Baron Barnard. She by marriage Countess Darlington.

On 3rd July 1815 William Vane 3rd Duke Cleveland and Grace Caroline Lowther Duchess of Cleveland were married at St James' Church, Piccadilly. She the daughter of William Lowther 1st Earl Lonsdale and Augusta Fane Countess Lonsdale. He the son of William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland and Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington. They were half fifth cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. On 18th January 1864 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland died at the parish of St George's Church, Hanover Square. His brother William succeeded 3rd Duke of Cleveland, 3rd Marquess of Cleveland, 5th Earl Darlington, 5th Viscount Barnard, 7th Baron Barnard, 3rd Baron Raby of Raby Castle in County Durham. Grace Caroline Lowther Duchess of Cleveland by marriage Duchess of Cleveland. On 6th September 1864 William Vane 3rd Duke Cleveland died. His brother Harry succeeded 4th Duke of Cleveland, 4th Marquess of Cleveland, 6th Earl Darlington, 6th Viscount Barnard, 8th Baron Barnard, 4th Baron Raby of Raby Castle in County Durham.
