The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." The King has been pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, to confer the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom upon the undermentioned gentlemen, and the heirs male of their respective bodies lawfully begotten: —

Admiral Sir Charles William de la Poer Beresford (age 69), G.C.B., G.C.V.O. (commonly called Lord Charles William de la Poer Beresford), and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style and title of Beresford of Metemmeh, and of Curraghmore in the County of Waterford.

Sir Alexander Henderson, of Buscot Park, in the County of Berks, Baronet, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style and title of Baron Faringdon, of Buscot Park in the County of Berks.

Sir Thomas George Shaughnessy, K.C.V.O., and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style and title of Baron Shaughnessy, of the City of Montreal in the Dominion of Canada, and of Ashford in the County of Limerick.

William Waldorf Astor (age 67), of Hever Castle, in the County of Kent, Esquire, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style and title of Baron Astor, of Hever Castle in the County of Kent.

On 18th October 1919 William Waldorf Astor 1st Viscount Astor (age 71) died. His son Waldorf (age 40) succeeded 2nd Viscount Astor, 2nd Baron Astor.

On 30th September 1952 Waldorf Astor 2nd Viscount Astor (age 73) died. His son William (age 45) succeeded 3rd Viscount Astor, 3rd Baron Astor. Sarah Norton Viscountess Astor (age 32) by marriage Viscountess Astor.

On 7th March 1966 William Waldorf Astor 3rd Viscount Astor (age 58) died. His son William (age 14) succeeded 4th Viscount Astor, 4th Baron Astor.

19th July 1971. Son Gavin Astor 2nd Baron Astor succeeded.

28th June 1984. Son John Astor 3rd Baron Astor succeeded.

On 21st January 1956 John Jacob Astor 1st Baron Astor (age 69) was created 1st Baron Astor. Violet Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound Baroness Astor (age 66) by marriage Baroness Astor.

On 19th July 1971 John Jacob Astor 1st Baron Astor (age 85) died. His son Gavin (age 53) succeeded 2nd Baron Astor. Irene Haig Baroness Astor (age 51) by marriage Baroness Astor.

On 28th June 1984 Gavin Astor 2nd Baron Astor (age 66) died. His son John (age 38) succeeded 3rd Baron Astor.
