The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." In 1794 Welbore Ellis 1st Baron Mendip (age 80) was created 1st Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset with remainder to the three eldest sons of his sister Anne by her husband Henry Agar, of Gowran and Gowran Castle.

On 2nd February 1802 Welbore Ellis 1st Baron Mendip (age 88) died. His great nephew Henry (age 41) succeeded 2nd Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset.

On 13th July 1836 Henry Agar 2nd Viscount Clifden (age 75) died in Hanover Square. His grandson Henry (age 11) succeeded 3rd Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, 3rd Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset.

On 20th February 1866 Henry Agar-Ellis 3rd Viscount Clifden (age 40) died. His son Henry (age 2) succeeded 4th Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, 4th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset, 3rd Baron Dover.

On 28th March 1895 Henry George Agar-Ellis 4th Viscount Clifden (age 31) died. His uncle Leopold (age 65) succeeded 5th Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, 5th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset, 4th Baron Dover. Harriet Stonor Viscountess Clifden (age 58) by marriage Viscountess Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny.

On 10th September 1899 Leopold George Agar-Ellis 5th Viscount Clifden (age 70) died. His half second cousin Thomas (age 55) succeeded 6th Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, 6th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset. Baron Dover extinct. Mary Dickinson Viscountess Clifden by marriage Viscountess Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny.

On 19th July 1930 Thomas Agar-Robartes 6th Viscount Clifden (age 86) died. His son Francis (age 47) succeeded 7th Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, 7th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset, 3rd Baron Robartes of Lanhydrock and of Truro in Cornwall.

On 15th July 1966 Francis Gerald Agar-Robartes 7th Viscount Clifden (age 83) died unmarried. His brother Arthur (age 79) succeeded 8th Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, 8th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset, 4th Baron Robartes of Lanhydrock and of Truro in Cornwall.

On 22nd December 1974 Arthur Victor Agar-Robartes 8th Viscount Clifden (age 87) died without male issue. He was buried at St Hydroc's Church, Lanhydrock. Viscount Clifden of Gowran in County Kilkenny, Baron Robartes of Lanhydrock and of Truro in Cornwall extinct. His fourth cousin once removed Shaun (age 29) succeeded 9th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset.

On 13th February 2019 Shaun Agar 6th Earl Normanton (age 73) died. His son James (age 37) succeeded 6th Earl Normanton, 10th Baron Mendip of Mendip in Somerset.
