All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 9th July 1626 Ralph Assheton 1st Baronet was created 1st Baronet Assheton of Middleton in Lancashire.

On 23rd April 1665 Ralph Assheton 1st Baronet died. His son Ralph (age 14) succeeded 2nd Baronet Assheton of Middleton in Lancashire.

Before 1694 Ralph Assheton 2nd Baronet (age 42) and Mary Vavasour Lady Assheton (age 27) were married. She by marriage Lady Assheton of Middleton in Lancashire.

On 3rd May 1716 Ralph Assheton 2nd Baronet (age 65) died. His nephew Ralph (age 24) succeeded 3rd Baronet Assheton of Middleton in Lancashire.

On 31st December 1765 Ralph Assheton 3rd Baronet (age 73) died without issue. Baronet Assheton of Middleton in Lancashire extinct.

Baronet Assheton of Downham in Lancaster 2nd Creation 1945

On 21st September 1955 Ralph Cockayne Assheton 1st Baronet (age 95) died. His son Ralph (age 54) succeeded 2nd Baronet Assheton of Downham in Lancaster.

In 1984 Ralph Assheton 1st Baron Clitheroe (age 82) died. His son Ralph (age 54) succeeded 2nd Baron Clitheroe of Downham in Lancashire, 3rd Baronet Assheton of Downham in Lancaster.
