Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

20th February 1950. Son Hector Wroth Lethbridge 6th Baronet (age 51) succeeded.

29th June 1978. Son Thomas Periam Hector Noel Lethbridge 7th Baronet (age 27) succeeded.

In 1804 John Lethbridge 1st Baronet (age 58) was created 1st Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset apparently for having paid the gambling debts of the Prince Regent, the future King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland (age 41).

In 1815 John Lethbridge 1st Baronet (age 69) died. His son Thomas (age 36) succeeded 2nd Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset. He was buried at Church of St Mary the Virgin, Pilton [Map] where there is a ledger stone inscribed as follows:

Here lyeth ye body of Phillip Bowchier, Gent., buried ye 3d day of Agust 1687 aged 64 years. Here also layeth the body of Agnes late wife of Phillip Bowchier, Gent., who departed this life ye 25th day of Nobr 1698 aged 66. Here lyes also buryed the body of Thomas Lethbridge, Gent., son of Thomas Lethbridge of Clement's Inne, Gent., a younger son of Christopher Lethbridge of Westaway, Esq., by Margaret his wife daughter of the above named Philip Bowchier. Obt 10th Augst 1744 aetatis 20"

On 17th October 1849 Thomas Buckler Lethbridge 2nd Baronet (age 71) died. He was buried at St Mary The Virgin Church, Rufford [Map]. His son John (age 51) succeeded 3rd Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset.

In 1873 John Hesketh Lethbridge 3rd Baronet (age 75) died. His son Wroth (age 41) succeeded 4th Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset.

On 26th November 1902 Wroth Acland Lethbridge 4th Baronet (age 71) died. His son Wroth (age 38) succeeded 5th Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset. Alianore Chandos-Pole Lady Lethbridge (age 34) by marriage Lady Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset.

On 20th February 1950 Wroth Periam Christopher Lethbridge 5th Baronet (age 86) died. His son Hector (age 51) succeeded 6th Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset. Evelyn Diana Noel Lady Lethbridge (age 35) by marriage Lady Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset.

On 29th June 1978 Hector Wroth Lethbridge 6th Baronet (age 79) died. His son Thomas (age 27) succeeded 7th Baronet Lethbridge of Westaway House in Devon and Winkley Court in Somerset.
