Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 1st April 1779 William Stanhope 2nd Earl of Harrington [aged 59] died. His son Charles [aged 26] succeeded 3rd Earl Harrington, 3rd Viscount Petersham, 3rd Baron Harrington. Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 23] by marriage Countess Harrington.
On 5th September 1829 Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 76] died. His son Charles [aged 49] succeeded 4th Earl Harrington, 4th Viscount Petersham, 4th Baron Harrington.
In 1831 Charles Stanhope 4th Earl of Harrington [aged 50] and Maria Foote Countess Harrington were married. She by marriage Countess Harrington. He the son of Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington.
On 3rd March 1851 Charles Stanhope 4th Earl of Harrington [aged 70] died. His brother Leicester [aged 66] succeeded 5th Earl Harrington, 5th Viscount Petersham, 5th Baron Harrington. Elizabeth Green Countess Harrington [aged 42] by marriage Countess Harrington.
On 7th September 1862 Leicester FitzGerald Charles Stanhope 5th Earl of Harrington [aged 78] died. His son Sydney [aged 16] succeeded 6th Earl Harrington, 6th Viscount Petersham, 6th Baron Harrington.
On 22nd February 1866 Sydney Stanhope 6th Earl Harrington [aged 20] died. His first cousin Charles [aged 56] succeeded 7th Earl Harrington, 7th Viscount Petersham, 7th Baron Harrington.
William of Worcester's Chronicle of England
William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

In 1917 Charles Augustus Stanhope 8th Earl Harrington [aged 73] died at Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire [Map]. His brother Dudley [aged 57] succeeded 9th Earl Harrington, 9th Viscount Petersham, 9th Baron Harrington.
On 13th November 1928 Dudley Stanhope 9th Earl of Harrington [aged 69] died. His son Charles [aged 41] succeeded 10th Earl Harrington, 10th Viscount Petersham, 10th Baron Harrington.
On 16th November 1929 Charles Stanhope 10th Earl of Harrington [aged 42] died. His son William [aged 7] succeeded 11th Earl Harrington, 11th Viscount Petersham, 11th Baron Harrington.
On 5th February 1942 William Stanhope 11th Earl of Harrington [aged 19] and Eileen Foley Grey Countess Harrington [aged 20] were married. She by marriage Countess Harrington. He the son of Charles Stanhope 10th Earl of Harrington and Margaret Trelawney Seaton.
On 14th October 1964 William Stanhope 11th Earl of Harrington [aged 42] and Priscilla Margaret Cubitt Countess Harrington [aged 23] were married. She by marriage Countess Harrington. He the son of Charles Stanhope 10th Earl of Harrington and Margaret Trelawney Seaton.
