The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 23rd October 1642 the Battle of Edge Hill was fought at Edge Hill [Map]. The Royal army was commanded by King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland (age 41) (with his son King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland (age 12) present), Prince Rupert Palatinate Simmern 1st Duke Cumberland (age 22) and Richard Spencer (age 49) commanded the army that included Maurice Palatinate Simmern (age 21), Richard Byron 2nd Baron Byron (age 36), Lucius Carey 2nd Viscount Falkland (age 32), Charles Cavendish (age 22), Henry Newton aka Puckering 3rd Baronet (age 24), Spencer Compton 2nd Earl of Northampton (age 41), Thomas Salusbury 2nd Baronet (age 30), John Byron 1st Baron Byron (age 43) and William Feilding 1st Earl Denbigh (age 55).
George Stewart 9th Seigneur D'Aubigny (age 24) was killed.

Samuel Sandys (age 27) commanded a troop of horse.
Richard Sandys (age 26) was killed.
Thomas Strickland (age 20) was knighted on the field for his gallantry.
Henry Hunloke 1st Baronet (age 24) was knighted by King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland.
William Dugdale (age 37) witnessed the battle and subsequently surveyed the battlefield.

Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey (age 59) was killed. His son Montagu (age 34) succeeded 2nd Earl Lindsey, 15th Baron Willoughby de Eresby.
William Pennyman 1st Baronet (age 35) commanded a regiment, of which he served as Colonel, which he led for the King.
Edward Stradling 2nd Baronet (age 42) fought for the King, was captured imprisoned for seven months, and died a month after his release.

Around 1648 Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 40) and Bridget Wray Countess Lindsey (age 21) were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. She the daughter of Edward Wray and Elizabeth Norreys 3rd Baroness Norreys Rycote. He the son of Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey and Elizabeth Montagu Countess Lindsey. They were second cousins.
On 25th July 1666 Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 58) died. His son Robert (age 35) succeeded 3rd Earl Lindsey, 16th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 33) by marriage Countess Lindsey.
Around 1700 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 69) and Elizabeth Pope Countess Lindsey were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. She the daughter of Thomas Pope 2nd Earl Downe and Lucy Dutton Countess Downe. He the son of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness.
On 9th May 1701 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 70) died. His son Robert (age 40) succeeded 4th Earl Lindsey, 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. Albinia Farington Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven by marriage Countess Lindsey.

On 1st January 1741 Peregrine Bertie 2nd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven (age 54) died. His son Peregrine (age 27) succeeded 3rd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, 3rd Marquess Lindsay, 6th Earl Lindsey, 19th Baron Willoughby de Eresby.
On 12th August 1778 Peregrine Bertie 3rd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven (age 64) died. His son Robert (age 21) succeeded 4th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, 4th Marquess Lindsay, 7th Earl Lindsey, 20th Baron Willoughby de Eresby.
On 8th July 1779 Robert Bertie 4th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven (age 22) died of scarlet fever unmarried at Grimsthorpe, South Kesteven. His uncle Brownlow (age 50) succeeded 5th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, 5th Marquess Lindsay, 8th Earl Lindsey. His sister Priscilla (age 18) succeeded 21st Baroness Willoughby de Eresby.
In 1809 Albermarle Bertie 9th Earl Lindsey (age 64) and Charlotte Layard Countess Lindsey (age 28) were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. The difference in their ages was 35 years.

On 8th February 1809 Brownlow Bertie 5th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven (age 79) died without male issue at Grimsthorpe, South Kesteven. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Swinstead [Map] on 17th February 1809. Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, Marquess Lindsay extinct. His third cousin Albermarle (age 64) succeeded 9th Earl Lindsey.
Sculpted by Richard Westmacott (age 33). A handsome white marble wall tablet in Grecian style depicting deceased and wife on a catafalque with mourning female figure, flanked by mother, children and angel. Above a scrolled cornice with Ducal coronet and palm. Beneath a rectangular inscription panel, flanked by scrolled brackets.
On 17th September 1818 Albermarle Bertie 9th Earl Lindsey (age 74) died. His son George (age 3) succeeded 10th Earl Lindsey.
On 21st March 1877 George Bertie 10th Earl Lindsey (age 62) died without issue. His brother Montague (age 61) succeeded 11th Earl Lindsey. Felicia Elizabetha Welby Countess Lindsey (age 42) by marriage Countess Lindsey.
On 27th January 1899 Montague Peregrine Bertie 11th Earl Lindsey (age 83) died. His son Montague (age 37) succeeded 12th Earl Lindsey. Millicent Cox Countess Lindsey (age 36) by marriage Countess Lindsey.
On 2nd January 1938 Montague Peregrine Albemarle Bertie 12th Earl Lindsey (age 76) died. His half fifth cousin three times removed Montagu (age 50) succeeded 13th Earl Lindsey.
On 11th September 1963 Montagu Henry Edmund Cecil Towneley Bertie 8th Earl of Abingdon 13th Earl Lindsey (age 75) died. His first cousin Richard (age 32) succeeded 14th Earl Lindsey, 9th Earl Abingdon, 13th Baron Norreys of Rycote.
