In 1170 William Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp (age 65) died at Elmley Castle, Worcestershire. He was buried at Worcester Cathedral [Map]. Baron Beauchamp of Elmley in Worcestershire extinct. It isn't clear whether his son William Beauchamp (age 28) was called to Parliament so the Barony is assumed to extinct.

After 1196 Richard Vernon 2nd Baron Vernon died. Baron Vernon extinct.

In 1215 William Malet 1st Baron Curry Mallet (age 40) died. Baron Curry Mallet extinct.

On 24th March 1224 William Mowbray 6th Baron Thirsk (age 51) died. Baron Thirsk extinct.

In December 1263 Walter Clifford 3rd Baron Clifford died at Clifford Castle, Herefordshire [Map]. Baron Clifford Feudal either extinct or abeyant between his two daughters Lucia Clifford (age 43) and Maud Clifford (age 29) and their issue. His brother Roger Clifford was the great x 2 grandfather of Roger Clifford who was created 1st Baron de Clifford in 1299.

Before 5th December 1291 Philip Marmion 5th Baron Marmion (age 57) died. Baron Marmion of Tamworth in Staffordshire extinct.

In 1297 Roger de Montalt 1st Baron Montalt (age 59) died at Mold Castle, Flintshire [Map]. Baron Montalt extinct. His brother inherited Castle Rising Castle [Map]. His brother Robert de Montalt 1st Baron Montalt was created Baron Montalt in 1299.

On 12th March 1310 William Leybourne 1st Baron Leybourne (age 68) died at Criccieth Castle [Map]. Baron Leybourne extinct or abeyant. His son had predeceased him without issue.

On 29th April 1310 Robert Fitzroger 5th Baron Warkworth (age 70) died at Clavering, Essex. Baron Warkworth extinct.

In 1315 Edward Burnell (age 29) died. Baron Burnell extinct. His widow Aline Despencer Baroness Burnell retained Acton Burnell Castle [Map]. His sister Maud Burnell Baroness Lovel and Burnell (age 25) inherited his estates.

On 1st July 1322 John Somery 4th Baron Dudley (age 43) died. His son doesn't appear to have been summoned to Parliament so Baron Dudley of Somery extinct.

In 1328 Otto Grandison 1st Baron Grandison (age 90) died. Baron Grandison extinct.

In 1329 Robert Mohaut 1st Baron Mohaut aka Montalt (age 59) died. Baron Mohaut aka Montalt extinct.

On 6th June 1333 William Donn Burgh 3rd Earl of Ulster (age 20) was murdered by Richard de Mandeville in revenge for the murder of Richard's wife's brother Walter Liath de Burgh the year before. Earl of Ulster and Baron Burgh extinct. There is some argument that his daughter Elizabeth Burgh Duchess of Clarence succeeded as Countess of Ulster although her husband Lionel of Antwerp 1st Duke of Clarence appears to have been Earl of Ulster of a new creation. On 25th July 1358 John Neville 2nd Baron Neville Essex (age 59) died. Baron Neville Essex extinct. Possibly abeyant given that it was created by writ.

On 2nd December 1360 John Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp Warwick (age 44) died. Baron Beauchamp Warwick extinct.

After 1366 Nicholas Dagworth 2nd Baron Dagworth died. Baron Dagworth extinct.

Before 24th January 1370 Peter Montfort 3rd Baron Montfort (age 79) died. Baron Montfort either extinct or abeyant.

In 1372 Robert Tiptoft 3rd Baron Tibetot (age 31) died. Baron Tibetot extinct.

On 11th April 1372 Thomas Camoys 2nd Baron Camoys (age 62) died. Baron Camoys extinct. It isn't clear why the barony became extinct since his half-brother Thomas Camoys 1st Baron Camoys (age 21) should have succeeded. He, Thomas, was summoned to Parliament in 1383 as Baron Camoys of the second creation.

In December 1379 Walter Paveley 5th Baron Burghesh died. Baron Burghesh extinct. Possibly abeyant.

On 15th February 1382 William Ufford 2nd Earl Suffolk (age 43) died at Westminster Hall [Map]. Earl Suffolk, Baron Ufford extinct.

In January 1387 Robert Grey 4th Baron Grey (age 38) died at Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire. Baron Grey of Rotherfield dormant. Some sources refer to his daughter Joan Grey having succeeded as 5th Barones?

In 1399 Robert Zouche 4th Baron Zouche Mortimer (age 68) died. Baron Zouche Mortimer extinct. Some sources describe Joyce Burnell as 5th Baroness Zouche of Mortimer although it is unclear whose daughter she was?

On 8th July 1399 Elizabeth Saye 5th Baroness Say (age 32) died. Baron Say extinct.

On 18th October 1404 William Astley 4th Baron Astley (age 64) died. Baron Astley extinct.

Battle of Île de Bréhat

On 15th September 1408 Edmund Holland 4th Earl Kent (age 24) was killed at Île de Bréhat during the Battle of Île de Bréhat. He was buried in Bourne Abbey, Lincolnshire [Map]. Earl Kent, Baron Holand extinct. Baron Wake of Liddell abeyant.

On 10th May 1409 Joan Devereux 3rd Baroness Devereux Baroness Burnell (age 30) died. Baron Devereux extinct.

In 1411 Elizabeth St John (age 80) died. Baron St John of Lagenhamdormant or extinct.

On 19th June 1411 Elizabeth Boteler Baroness Ferrers Wem (age 66) died. Baron Wem and Oversley extinct.

On 27th November 1420 Hugh Burnell 2nd Baron Burnell (age 73) died at Cotton, Suffolk. He was buried at Halesowen Abbey, Shropshire [Map]. Baron Burnell 2C extinct.

1460 Battle of Northampton

On 10th July 1460 the Yorkist army led by the future King Edward IV of England (age 18) and including Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury (age 31), Archbishop George Neville (age 28), William Neville 1st Earl Kent (age 55), Edward Brooke 6th Baron Cobham (age 45) and John Scrope 5th Baron Scrope of Bolton (age 22) defeated the Lancastrian army at the 1460 Battle of Northampton.

Edmund Grey 1st Earl Kent (age 43) had started the day as part of the Lancastrian army but did nothing to prevent the Yorkist army attacking.

King Henry VI of England and II of France (age 38) was captured.

Humphrey Stafford 1st Duke of Buckingham (age 57) was killed. His grandson Henry (age 5) succeeded 2nd Duke of Buckingham, 7th Earl Stafford, 8th Baron Stafford.

John Talbot 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury (age 42) was killed. His son John (age 11) succeeded 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury, 3rd Earl Waterford, 8th Baron Furnivall, 12th Baron Strange Blackmere, 9th Baron Talbot.

Thomas Percy 1st Baron Egremont (age 37) was killed. [Baron Egremont of Egremont Castle in Cumberland extinct. Some authoirities state, however, that he left a son, Sir John Percy, who never assumed the title.]

John Beaumont 1st Viscount Beaumont (age 50) was killed. His son William (age 22) succeeded 2nd Viscount Beaumont, 7th Baron Beaumont.

William Lucy (age 56) was killed apparently by servants of a member of the Stafford family who wanted his wife Margaret Fitzlewis (age 21).

Thomas Tresham (age 40) fought.

William Beaumont 2nd Viscount Beaumont and William Norreys (age 19) were knighted.

Thomas "Bastard of Exeter" Holland was executed following the battle.

The battle was fought south of the River Nene [Map] in the grounds of Delapré Abbey.

Battle of Towton

On 29th March 1461 the Battle of Towton was a decisive victory for King Edward IV of England (age 18) bringing to an end the first war of the Wars of the Roses. Said to be the bloodiest battle on English soil 28000 were killed mainly during the rout that followed the battle.

The Yorkist army was commanded by King Edward IV of England with John Mowbray 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 45), William Neville 1st Earl Kent (age 56), William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 30) (knighted), Walter Blount 1st Baron Mountjoy (age 45), Henry Bourchier 2nd Count of Eu 1st Earl Essex (age 57), John Scrope 5th Baron Scrope of Bolton (age 23) and John Wenlock 1st Baron Wenlock (age 61).

The Lancastrian army suffered significant casualties including Richard Percy (age 35), Ralph Bigod Lord Morley (age 50), John Bigod (age 28), Robert Cromwell (age 71), Ralph Eure (age 49), John Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby (age 51), John Beaumont (age 33), Thomas Dethick (age 61), Everard Simon Digby, William Plumpton (age 25) and William Welles (age 51) who were killed.

Henry Percy 3rd Earl of Northumberland (age 39) was killed. Earl of Northumberland, Baron Percy of Alnwick, Baron Percy of Topcliffe.

Ralph Dacre 1st Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 49) was killed. He was buried at the nearby Saxton church where his chest tomb is extant. Baron Dacre Gilsland extinct.

Lionel Welles 6th Baron Welles (age 55) was killed. His son Richard (age 33) succeeded 7th Baron Welles.

The Lancastrian army was commanded by Henry Beaufort 2nd or 3rd Duke of Somerset (age 25), Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter (age 30), Henry Percy 3rd Earl of Northumberland and Andrew Trollope.

Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter was attainted after the battle; Duke Exeter, Earl Huntingdon forfeit.


Those who fought for the Lancaster included William Tailboys 7th Baron Kyme (age 46), William Plumpton, John Sutton 1st Baron Dudley (age 60), William Norreys (age 20), Thomas Grey 1st Baron Grey of Richemont (age 43), Robert Hungerford 3rd Baron Hungerford 1st Baron Moleyns (age 30), John Talbot 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury (age 12), Richard Welles 7th Baron Welles, Baron Willoughby, Richard Woodville 1st Earl Rivers (age 56), James Butler 1st Earl Wiltshire 5th Earl Ormonde (age 40), John Butler 6th Earl Ormonde (age 39), William Beaumont 2nd Viscount Beaumont (age 22), Henry Roos and Thomas Tresham (age 41). Cardinal John Morton (age 41) were captured.

John Heron of Ford Castle Northumberland (age 45), Robert Dethick (age 86), Andrew Trollope and his son David Trollope were killed.

On 16th January 1469 Henry Bromflete 1st Baron Vesci (age 62) died at Londesborough without male issue. Baron Vesci extinct.

26th July 1469 Battle of Edgecote Moor aka Danes Moor aka Banbury

On 17th August 1469 Humphrey Stafford 1st Earl Devon (age 30), having escaped after the Battle of Edgecote Moor, was captured and executed by a mob at Bridgwater, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at Glastonbury Abbey [Map]. Earl Devon, Baron Stafford of Southwick extinct.

14th April 1471 Battle of Barnet

On 14th April 1471 Edward IV (age 28) commanded at the Battle of Barnet supported by his brothers George (age 21) and Richard (age 18), John Babington (age 48), Wiliam Hastings (age 40) (commanded), Ralph Hastings, William Norreys (age 30), William Parr (age 37), John Savage (age 49), William Bourchier Viscount Bourchier (age 41), Thomas St Leger (age 31), John Tuchet 6th Baron Audley, 3rd Baron Tuchet (age 45), Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (age 40), John Scott (age 48) and Thomas Strickland.

The Yorkists William Blount (age 29), Humphrey Bourchier (age 36), Henry Stafford (age 46) and Thomas Parr were killed.

Humphrey Bourchier 1st Baron Cromwell (age 40), was killed. Baron Cromwell extinct.

The Lancastrians ...

Warwick the Kingmaker (age 42) was killed. Earl Salisbury, Baron Montagu and Baron Montagu forfeit on the assumption he was attainted either before or after his death; the date of his attainder is unknown. If not attainted the titles may have been abeyant between his two daughters Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence (age 19) and Anne Neville Queen Consort England (age 14).

John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu (age 40) was killed. Marquess Montagu, Baron Montagu forfeit; unclear as to when he was attainted. He was buried at Bisham Abbey [Map].

William Tyrrell was killed.

William Fiennes 2nd Baron Saye and Sele (age 43) was killed. His son Henry (age 25) succeeded 3rd Baron Saye and Sele. Anne Harcourt Baroness Saye and Sele by marriage Baroness Saye and Sele.

Henry Holland 3rd Duke Exeter (age 40) commanded the left flank, was badly wounded and left for dead, Henry Stafford and John Paston (age 27) were wounded, John de Vere 13th Earl of Oxford (age 28) commanded, and John Paston (age 29) and William Beaumont 2nd Viscount Beaumont (age 33) fought.

Robert Harleston (age 36) was killed.

Thomas Hen Salusbury (age 62) was killed.

Thomas Tresham (age 51) escaped but was subsequently captured and executed on the 6th of May 1471.

4th May 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury

On 4th May 1471 King Edward IV of England (age 29) was victorious at the 4th May 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury. His brother Richard (age 18), Richard Beauchamp 2nd Baron Beauchamp Powick (age 36), John Howard 1st Duke of Norfolk (age 46), George Neville 4th and 2nd Baron Abergavenny (age 31), John Savage (age 49), John Savage (age 27), Thomas St Leger (age 31), John Tuchet 6th Baron Audley, 3rd Baron Tuchet (age 45), Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (age 40) fought. William Brandon (age 46), George Browne (age 31), Ralph Hastings, Richard Hastings Baron Willoughby (age 38), James Tyrrell (age 16), Roger Kynaston of Myddle and Hordley (age 38) were knighted. William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 40) commanded.

Margaret of Anjou (age 41) was captured. Her son Edward of Westminster Prince of Wales (age 17) was killed. He was the last of the Lancastrian line excluding the illegitmate Charles Somerset 1st Earl of Worcester (age 11) whose line continues to the present.

John Courtenay 15th Earl Devon (age 36) was killed and attainted. Earl Devon, Baron Courtenay forfeit. Some sources refer to these titles as being abeyant?

John Wenlock 1st Baron Wenlock (age 71) was killed. Baron Wenlock extinct.

John Delves (age 49), John Beaufort (age 30), William Vaux of Harrowden (age 35) and Robert Whittingham (age 42) were killed.

Edmund Beaufort 3rd Duke of Somerset (age 32), Humphrey Tuchet (age 37) and Hugh Courtenay (age 44) were captured.

Henry Roos fought and escaped to Tewkesbury Abbey [Map] where he sought sanctuary. He was subsequently pardoned.

William Carey (age 34) was killed.

On 2nd May 1473 Ralph Boteler 6th and 1st Baron Sudeley (age 84) died. Baron Sudeley extinct. Baron Sudeley abeyant.

On 2nd September 1473 Elizabeth Scales Countess Rivers died. Baron Scales extinct.

On 6th March 1491 Richard Woodville 3rd Earl Rivers (age 38) died. Earl Rivers, Baron Rivers extinct.

On 18th March 1496 Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (age 65) died. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church Gainsborough. His son Edward Burgh (age 33) was deemed insane so not summoned to Parliament; Baron Burgh extinct.

On 9th February 1498 John Welles 1st Viscount Welles (age 48) died in London. Viscount Welles, Baron Welles extinct. His will reads ...

In the name of oure Lorde Jeshu, Amen. I, John, Viscounte lorde Wellis, uncle to the Kynge (age 41), oure soveraigne lorde, and brodre to the right noble prynces, Margaret, countes of Richemond (age 54), naturall and dere modre to oure said soveregne lord, beyng of goode and hole memory, ye viij daie of February, the yere of oure Lorde God 1498, and in the xiiij yere of the regne of our saide soverayne lorde, make this my testament. My bodie to be buried in suche place as [to] the kynge, the quene (age 31), my lady, his moder, and my lady, my wife (age 28), shalbe thought, most convenyent, and the costis and charge of the same burying, the obsequyes, masses, funeralles and all oder thynges therto convenyent and necessarie. On 30th May 1499 John Cheney 1st Baron Cheyne (age 57) died. Baron Cheyne extinct. Fluted Period. Alabaster Monument at Salisbury Cathedral [Map].

Fluted armour typified by having no headwear, being clean shaven, a breastplate in two pieces and the neck protected by a Standard. Damaged angel, its head removed, holding the cushion on which his head rests. He wearing a Lancastrian Esses Collar with large Esses. Ringed fingers.

Mutilated Lion at his feet with its head missing. The figure beneath his right foot appears to be a Bedesman. That beneath his left foot may be the remains of the means by which a bedesman was originally fixed to the foot. What appears to be a birds foot lying across the lions body is the tail of the lion.

On 28th January 1501 John Dynham 1st Baron Dynham (age 68) died at Lambeth, Surrey [Map]. He was buried at Greyfriars Church Farringdon Within [Map]. Baron Dinham extinct.

On 1st December 1511 Giles Brugge 6th Baron Chandos (age 49) died. Baron Chandos extinct. Baron Chandos of the first creation was subject to some confusion with the send and third barons not being summoned to Parliament. The Barony was, hoever, called out of abeyance for the 4th Baron in 1458. Gile's son John was created Baron Chandos of the second creation in 1554 so the first, if it existed, is assumed to have become extinct.

Trial and Execution of the Duke of Buckingham

On 17th May 1521 Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham (age 43) was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map] for no specific reason other than his having a significant amount of Plantagenet blood and was, therefore, considered a threat by Henry VIII (age 29). He was posthumously attainted by Act of Parliament on 31 July 1523, disinheriting his children. He was buried at St Peter's Church, Britford [Map]. Duke of Buckingham, Earl Stafford and Baron Stafford extinct.

His father Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham had been executed for his part in Buckingham's Rebellion, his great-grandfather Humphrey Stafford 1st Duke of Buckingham was killed at the 1460 Battle of Northampton, and his great-great grand-father was killed at the Battle of Shrewsbury, not forgetting his great-uncle Henry Stafford who was killed at the Battle of Barnet and his daughter Margaret Stafford (age 10) who was burned at the stake for her part in Bigod's Rebellion.

Around 1523 John de Lisle 9th Baron Lisle (age 51) died. Baron Lisle extinct.

On 27th April 1525 John Marney 2nd Baron Marney (age 41) died without male issue. Baron Marney extinct.

On 30th April 1544 Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden (age 56) died. He was buried at Saffron Walden, Essex [Map]. Baron Audley Walden in Essex extinct.

On 17th August 1545 Thomas Poynings 1st Baron Poynings (age 33) died at Boulogne sur Mer [Map]. Baron Poynings extinct.

On 10th September 1547 William Parr 1st Baron Parr of Horton (age 64) died. He was buried at Horton, Northamptonshire. Baron Parr of Horton extinct.

Around 1552 Margaret Bourchier 1st Baroness Bryan (age 84) died at Leyton, Essex. Baron Bryan extinct. It appears the title was for life only.

Before 15th February 1560 Francis William 2nd Baron Thame died. Baron Williams of Thame extinct.

Around April 1563 Elizabeth Tailboys Countess Warwick (age 40) died. Baron Tailboys of Kyme, Baron Kyme extinct.

On 28th October 1571 William Parr 1st Marquess Northampton (age 59) died at Warwick Priory, Warwickshire [Map]. He was buried in the Chancel of St Mary's Church, Warwick [Map]. His funeral was paid for by Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 38). Marquess Northampton and Baron Parr of Kendal extinct.

On 3rd September 1587 Henry Cheney 1st Baron Cheyne (age 47) died. He was buried at St George's Church, Toddington on 3rd September 1587. Baron Cheyne extinct. His estates were left to his widow Jane Wentworth Baroness Cheyne who subsequently bequeathed them to her nephew Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl Cleveland.

On 21st February 1590 Ambrose Dudley 3rd Earl Warwick (age 60) died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Warwick [Map]. Earl Warwick and Baron Lisle extinct.

Hamilton-Mohun Duel

On 15th November 1712 Charles Mohun 4th Baron Mohun Okehampton (age 37) duelled with James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) at Hyde Park [Map] over a legal dispute about the estate and inheritance of the late Earl Macclesfield. Mohun had married Charlotte Orby Baroness Mohun Okehampton grand-daughter of Charles Gerard 1st Earl Macclesfield. James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon had married Elizabeth Gerard Duchess Brandon (age 32). The two seconds, Macartney and Colonel Hamilton, were both charged as accessories to murder. Hamilton gave himself up, Macartney fled into exile in Hanover. Colonel Hamilton was found guilty of manslaughter.

James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon died from wounds received duelling. His son James (age 9) succeeded 5th Duke Hamilton, 2nd Duke Brandon of Suffolk, 2nd Baron Dutton of Cheshire.

Charles Mohun 4th Baron Mohun Okehampton died from wounds received duelling; his father had also been killed in a duel. Baron Mohun Okehampton and Baronet Mohun of Boconnoc in Cornwall extinct.

On 26th April 1716 John Somers 1st Baron Somers (age 65) died unmarried and without issue. Baron Somers extinct. His great nephew Charles Cocks 1st Baron Somers became 1st Baron Somers of the second creation in 1784.

On 13th April 1755 Edward Stawell 4th Baron Stawell died. Baron Stawell of Somerton in Somerset extinct. His daughter Mary Stawell 1st Baroness Stawell (age 30) inherited his estates. She was created Baron Stawell of Somerton in Somerset in 1760.

On 20th April 1759 Thomas William Coke 1st Earl of Leicester (age 61) died. Earl of Leicester and Baron Lovel of Minster Lovell extinct. Wenman Roberts aka Coke (age 42) inherited his estates.

On 31st August 1753 Edward Coke (age 34) died.

Monument in Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tittleshall [Map] commissioned by wife and mother Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester (age 58). Erected in 1760. Sculpted by Charles Atkinson. Gadrooned sarcophagus on pedestal with a carved and painted achievement above surrounded by extravagant mantling. Flanked by pair of composite columns supporting a dentilated pediment. Carved bust figures to the sides of the Earl and Countess by Louis Francois Roubiliac (age 56).

Edward Coke: On 2nd February 1719 he was born to Thomas William Coke 1st Earl of Leicester and Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester. On 1st April 1747 Edward Coke and Mary Campbell were married. She the daughter of John Campbell 2nd Duke Argyll. He the son of Thomas William Coke 1st Earl of Leicester and Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester.

On 7th September 1759 Edward Richard 8th Earl Warwick 5th Earl Holland (age 64) died without male issue. He was buried at St Mary Abbots Church, Kensington. Earl Warwick, Earl Holland, and Baron Rich of Leez extinct.

On 14th February 1761 Richard Annesley 6th Earl Anglesey (age 68) died. Earl Anglesey and Baron Annesley Newport Pagnell Buckinghamshire extinct. His son Arthur (age 16) succeeded 8th Viscount Valentia, 6th Baron Altham.

Arthur Annesley 1st Earl Mountnorris didn't succeed as 7th Earl Anglesey since his parent's secret marriage in September 1741 was not supported by sufficient evidence for the English House of Lords to accept his legitimacy. He was subsequently created Earl Mountnorris of Mountnorris Castle in Armagh more or less in compensation.

He succeeded to the Irish titles Viscount Valentia and Baron Altham since the Irish House of Lords did believe his legitimacy.

On 6th June 1762 George Anson 1st Baron Anson (age 65) died without issue at Moor Park, Hertfordshire. He was buried at St Michael and All Angels Church, Colwich [Map]. Baron Anson of Soberton in Southampton extinct. His brother Thomas Anson (age 67) inherited his estates.

His wife Anne Eliza Gamon Duchess Chandos (age 52) had pulled away a chair, whether inadvertently or deliberately is unknown, he was about to sit in causing him injuries from which he ultimately died. She was, thereafter, declared a lunatic and confined to their London home, 2 Queen Anne Street aka Chandos House Marylebone.

On 25th May 1915 Adeline Horsey Countess Cardigan (age 90) died.

He left Ada Alice "Dorothy Dene" Pullen (age 37) £5,000, plus another £5,000 in trust for herself and her sisters; the largest bequest he made.

On 14th February 1915 Willoughby Burrell 5th Baron Gwydyr (age 73) died. Baron Gwydyr of Cwydyr in Carnarfonshire extinct.

On 5th November 1915 Thomas Carew Trollope 3rd Baron Kesteven (age 24) died from wounds received unmarried. Baron Kesteven extinct. His first cousin once removed William (age 57) succeeded 10th Baronet Trollope of Casewick in Lincolnshire.

While journeying out to the Balkans, the ship Thomas was travelling on, the SS Mercian, was shelled by U-Boat SM U-38. After more than an hour being bombarded, the Mercian escaped. However, in that time, on 5th November 1915, 78 men were wounded, 23 were dead, 22 troops and eight crew members were missing. She managed to dock at Oran, Algeria, and those killed were either buried at sea or in the city's cemetery.

On 30th August 1923 Horace Farquhar 1st Earl Farquhar (age 79) died unmarried at his home 7 Grosvenor Square, Belgravia. Earl Farquhar, Viscount Farquhar of Saint Marylebone in London, Baron Farquhar of Saint Marylebone in London and Baronet Townsend-Farquhar of Cavendish Square in Saint Marylebone in London extinct. In his will he left many large legacies to his friends, including members of the Royal Family, but although his estate was assessed for probate at £400,000 the entire sum was taken up by debts, leaving nothing and revealing that Farquhar had been an undisclosed bankrupt.

The heir to the Duke's titles was a distant cousin. Rather than allow the entailed estates to pass with the titles, the Duke arranged to break the entails and thus enrich his own daughters.
