Biography of Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres 1376-1446

Paternal Family Tree: Capet

On 28th September 1364 [his father] Jean Bourbon I Count La Marche (age 20) and [his mother] Catherine Vendome were married. She by marriage Countess La Marche. He the son of [his grandfather] Jacques Bourbon I Count La Marche and Ponthieu and [his grandmother] Jeanne Chatillon Countess La Marche (age 44).

In 1376 Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres was born to Jean Bourbon I Count La Marche (age 32) and Catherine Vendome.

On 11th June 1393 [his father] Jean Bourbon I Count La Marche (age 49) died. His son [his brother] James (age 23) succeeded Coun La Marche. His son Louis (age 17) succeeded 1st Count Vendôme.

In 1420 [his illegitimate son] John Bourbon was born illegitimately to Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 44) and Sybil Bostum.

Battle of Cravant

On 31st July 1423 the English and Burgundian army defeated the French and Scottish armies at the Battle of Cravant at Cravant, Yonne. On the English side Thomas Montagu 1st Count Perche 4th Earl Salisbury (age 35) commanded. Robert Willoughby 6th Baron Willoughby (age 38) was second in command.

The French and Scottish army were commanded by John Stewart of Darnley 1st Count Évreux (age 43). Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 47) was second in command. Both were captured; Darnley lost an eye.

In 1424 Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 48) and Jeanne Laval Countess Vendôme and Castres were married. She by marriage Countess Vendôme. He the son of Jean Bourbon I Count La Marche and Catherine Vendome. They were fifth cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

In 1425 [his daughter] Catherine Bourbon was born to Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 49) and [his wife] Jeanne Laval Countess Vendôme and Castres.

In 1425 Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 49) was created 1st Count Castres. [his wife] Jeanne Laval Countess Vendôme and Castres by marriage Countess Castres.

In 1426 [his daughter] Gabrielle Bourbon was born to Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 50) and [his wife] Jeanne Laval Countess Vendôme and Castres.

In 1428 [his son] John Bourbon VIII Count Vendôme was born to Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 52) and [his wife] Jeanne Laval Countess Vendôme and Castres.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 21st December 1446 Louis Bourbon 1st Count Vendôme 1st Count Castres (age 70) died at Tours. His son [his son] John (age 18) succeeded VIII Count Vendôme.

In 1468 [his former wife] Jeanne Laval Countess Vendôme and Castres died.
