All About History Books
The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." In 1552 [his father] John Manuel Aviz Prince Portugal (age 14) and [his mother] Joanna of Austria Princess Portugal (age 16) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Charles V Holy Roman Emperor (age 51) and [his grandmother] Isabel Aviz Queen Consort Spain. He the son of [his grandfather] John III King Portugal (age 49) and [his grandmother] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 44). They were double first cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
On 2nd January 1554 [his father] John Manuel Aviz Prince Portugal (age 16) died.
On 20th January 1554 Sebastian King Portugal was born to John Manuel Aviz Prince Portugal (deceased) and Joanna of Austria Princess Portugal (age 18). He was named after Saint Sebastian on whose Feast Day he was born. At birth he was heir apparent to the throne of Portugal since his father had died two weeks before his birth. Soon after his birth his mother Joanna of Austria Princess Portugal left Portugal to become Regent of Spain for her father serving in the same capacity for her brother after her father's abdication. She never saw him. Coefficient of inbreeding 20.02%.
On 11th June 1557 [his grandfather] John III King Portugal (age 55) died. His grandson Sebastian (age 3) succeeded King Portugal. Sebastian's paternal grandmother [his grandmother] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 50) acted as Regent during his minority being replaced by Henrique Aviz Cardinal King Portugal (age 45) when she resigned in 1562.
On 7th September 1573 [his mother] Joanna of Austria Princess Portugal (age 38) died.
On 4th August 1578 Sebastian King Portugal (age 24) was killed at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir or the Three Kings. He was succeeded by his great uncle Henrique Aviz Cardinal King Portgal 1512-1580.
