The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

Biography of Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster 1899-1983

On 20th April 1898 [his father] Brigadier-General Charles Fitz-Clarence (age 32) and [his mother] Violet Spencer-Churchill (age 34) were married at the Citadel Church, Cairo. They were sixth cousins. He a great grandson of King William IV of the United Kingdom.

On 3rd October 1899 Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster was born to [his father] Brigadier-General Charles Fitz-Clarence (age 34) and [his mother] Violet Spencer-Churchill (age 35). He a great x 2 grandson of King William IV of the United Kingdom.

On 12th November 1914 [his father] Brigadier-General Charles Fitz-Clarence (age 49) was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, Belgium whilst commanding the 1st (Guards) Brigade. In his Despatch of 20 November 1914, Sir John French said: "Another officer whose name was particularly mentioned to me was Brigadier-General FitzClarence, VC, commanding the 1st Guards' Brigade. He was unfortunately killed in the night attack of the 11th November. His loss will be severely felt".

On 30th July 1925 Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster (age 25) and Monica Sheila Grayson were married. He the son of Brigadier-General Charles Fitz-Clarence and Violet Spencer-Churchill (age 61).

On 21st March 1926 [his son] Anthony Fitz-Clarence 7th Earl of Munster was born to Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster (age 26) and [his wife] Monica Sheila Grayson. He a great x 3 grandson of King William IV of the United Kingdom. He married 28th July 1949 Louise Delvigne Countess Munster.

In 1930 Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster (age 30) and Monica Sheila Grayson were divorced.

On 28th September 1939 Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster (age 39) and Vivian Scholfield were married. There was no issue from the marriage. He the son of Brigadier-General Charles Fitz-Clarence and Violet Spencer-Churchill (age 75).

In 1941 [his mother] Violet Spencer-Churchill (age 77) died.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 28th July 1949 [his son] Anthony Fitz-Clarence 7th Earl of Munster (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Louise Delvigne Countess Munster were married. He the son of Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster (age 49) and [his former wife] Monica Sheila Grayson.

In 1958 [his former wife] Monica Sheila Grayson died.

On 26th August 1975 George Fitz-Clarence 5th Earl Munster (age 69) died. His second cousin Edward (age 75) succeeded 6th Earl Munster, 6th Viscount Fitzclarence, 6th Baron Tewkesbury.

On 15th November 1983 Edward Fitz-Clarence 6th Earl of Munster (age 84) died. His son Anthony (age 57) succeeded 7th Earl Munster, 7th Viscount Fitzclarence, 7th Baron Tewkesbury.
