The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Biography of Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort 1768-1842

On 6th August 1759 [his father] Thomas Vereker (age 21) and [his mother] Juliana Smyth were married.

In 1768 Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort was born to [his father] Thomas Vereker (age 30) and [his mother] Juliana Smyth.

In 1789 Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort (age 21) and Jane Westropp were married.

On 1st July 1790 [his son] John Vereker 3rd Viscount Gort was born to Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort (age 22) and [his wife] Jane Westropp. He married 15th December 1814 Maria O'Grady Viscountess Gort and had issue.

In February 1798 Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort (age 30) and Elizabeth Palliser were married.

On 16th November 1801 [his father] Thomas Vereker (age 63) died.

On 13th July 1811 [his mother] Juliana Smyth died.

On 15th December 1814 [his son] John Vereker 3rd Viscount Gort (age 24) and [his daughter-in-law] Maria O'Grady Viscountess Gort (age 23) were married.

In 1816 John Prendergast Smyth 1st Viscount Gort was created 1st Viscount Gort with a special remainder to his nephew Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort (age 48) (son of his sister [his mother] Juliana Smyth).

On 23rd May 1817 John Prendergast Smyth 1st Viscount Gort died unmarried. Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort (age 49) succeeded 2nd Viscount Gort.

On 11th November 1842 Charles Vereker 2nd Viscount Gort (age 74) died. His son John (age 52) succeeded 3rd Viscount Gort. [his daughter-in-law] Maria O'Grady Viscountess Gort (age 51) by marriage Viscountess Gort.
